Kenya Power is setting the stage for a significant boost in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) across Kenya with a Ksh. 258 million investment planned over the next three years. This strategic move is aimed at establishing a more robust EV infrastructure to support the growing demand for cleaner transportation options in the region.
On Monday, Kenya Power unveiled a new EV charging station at its Stima Plaza headquarters in Nairobi. This facility, which cost Ksh. 6.5 million to set up, is equipped with a 50 kW DC charger capable of charging an electric vehicle in just one hour, and a 22 kW AC charger that has a two-hour charging time. This development marks the second such facility following the earlier establishment of a charging station at the Ruaraka Depot, which primarily serves the company’s transport section.
Kenya Power Managing Director and CEO, Joseph Siror, emphasized the dual purpose of these installations. “Not only do these charging stations meet our operational needs but they also allow us to gather critical data that will inform our continued support and expansion within the e-mobility industry,” he stated.
Dr. Siror announced plans to set up an additional nine charging stations by the end of July at various Kenya Power offices across the country, including locations in Donholm, Nakuru, Mombasa, Mtito Andei, Kisumu, Eldoret, Roysambu, Electricity House Nairobi, and Ragati. Each year, for the next two years, the company plans to add ten more facilities, with an annual budget of Ksh. 20 million dedicated to this expansion.
Furthermore, Kenya Power is enhancing its operational fleet with electric vehicles, having recently acquired two electric heavy-duty vehicles for Ksh. 18 million. By the end of December, the company aims to expand its electric fleet by adding nine more EVs and 25 electric motorcycles.
This investment not only supports Kenya Power’s operational efficiency but also aligns with broader environmental goals to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable energy solutions. Through these initiatives, Kenya Power is positioning itself at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution in East Africa, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future.
