The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a Kenya coast wind advisory warning of speeds reaching up to 20 knots along the coastline between April 6 and 7.
The forecast covers coastal counties including Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Lamu, where slight to moderate sea conditions are expected to influence marine activities over the two-day period.
Kenya coast wind patterns and expected conditions
According to the department, winds will blow from the south-southeast to southeast direction. Speeds are projected to range between 4 and 11 knots in the morning and increase to between 7 and 10 knots in the afternoon.
These conditions are classified as light to gentle breezes. Therefore, most marine operations can proceed, although caution remains necessary as conditions change.

Advisory for mariners and small vessels
Kenya Met has advised caution for operators of small boats. When Kenya coast wind speeds rise to between 7 and 17 knots, vessels may experience water sprays and reduced stability.
As a result, mariners are encouraged to closely monitor conditions. The department noted that stronger winds exceeding 21 knots can pose significant risks, although such levels are not expected during this forecast period.
Wave heights and sea state outlook
Wave heights along the coast are expected to range between 0.6 and 0.9 meters, translating to slight to moderate sea conditions. These levels are generally considered manageable for most marine activities.
In Kwale, Mombasa, and Kilifi, morning waves are forecast at between 2 and 3 feet with short to mid-period waves. Afternoon conditions are expected to stabilize slightly, with waves averaging around 2 feet.
In Lamu, seas are expected to remain relatively smooth in the morning under light winds, before transitioning to a slight chop in the afternoon.
Visibility and navigation conditions
Visibility along the coast is projected to remain moderate, ranging between 9 and 10 kilometers. Consequently, navigation conditions are expected to remain relatively safe for most vessels operating within the forecast window.
In addition, tidal variations and sunrise and sunset timings have been provided to assist mariners in planning activities effectively.
Broader weather outlook across Kenya
Beyond the coast, the Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts a mix of sunshine and isolated rainfall in several regions between April 6 and 7.
Rainfall is expected in parts of the Highlands, areas east and west of the Rift Valley, as well as the North-Eastern and Western regions. Coastal towns such as Mombasa and Malindi may also experience scattered showers and increased humidity.
Meanwhile, cities including Nairobi, Nakuru, and Kisumu are expected to record warm daytime temperatures ranging between 24°C and 28°C, with generally clear skies.
However, stronger southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots are forecast in Turkana and Marsabit counties, indicating more intense conditions in northern regions.

Outlook and implications
The Kenya coast wind advisory highlights the need for continued vigilance among marine operators, particularly small-scale fishermen and transport providers.
In conclusion, while conditions remain largely favorable, changing wind patterns and moderate sea states require careful monitoring to ensure safety along Kenya’s coastline.
