The Karen Blixen Museum Nairobi is a celebrated historic home and museum located just 10 kilometers from the city center, at the foot of the scenic Ngong Hills. It was once the residence of Karen Blixen, the Danish author best known for her memoir Out of Africa, which detailed her years spent in colonial Kenya.
Now a national heritage site, the Karen Blixen Museum Nairobi offers visitors a glimpse into Blixen’s life as a coffee farmer in British East Africa from 1917 to 1931. With original furnishings, farm tools, and props from the Oscar-winning 1985 film adaptation, the museum is a favorite among history buffs, literature lovers, and tourists.
History of the Karen Blixen House

The bungalow-style house that hosts the museum was constructed in 1912 by Swedish engineer Åke Sjögren. It was purchased in 1917 by Karen Blixen and her then-husband Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke, who aimed to run a coffee plantation. After their separation in 1921, Karen continued to manage the estate alone until she returned to Denmark in 1931.
Karen Blixen later chronicled her time in Kenya in the famous memoir Out of Africa and Shadows on the Grass. After her death in 1962, the Danish government donated the house to Kenya as an independence gift in 1964. The house was officially opened to the public as a museum in 1986, shortly after the global success of the Out of Africa film starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford.
