The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has reached a significant milestone by earning Level 3 certification in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme for four of its key airports: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Moi International Airport (MIA), Eldoret International Airport (EIA), and Kisumu International Airport (KIA).
What is the ACA Programme?
The Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme is an internationally recognized initiative that independently evaluates and accredits airports for their efforts in managing and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The programme consists of seven levels of certification:
- Mapping
- Reduction
- Optimization
- Neutrality
- Transformation
- Transition
- Level 5
Key Green Initiatives by the Airports
- JKIA:
- Adoption of energy-efficient infrastructure.
- Use of renewable energy sources.
- Implementation of waste-reduction programs.
- MIA:
- Use of solar energy for operations.
- Regular maintenance of equipment to ensure efficiency.
- KIA:
- Installation of solar-powered streetlights.
- Construction of an eco-friendly green terminal building.
- EIA:
- Replacement of Mercury Vapor lighting with energy-efficient LED fittings.
- Installation of solar-powered bollard lights in the concourse area.
KAA’s Environmental Commitment
KAA Managing Director Henry Ogoye highlighted the authority’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainability in the aviation sector. He noted that KAA began its carbon reduction journey with ACA Level 1 in 2021 and advanced to Level 2 in 2023.
“This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our staff and stakeholders who have collaborated to implement sustainable practices across our airports,” Ogoye stated.
Significance of the Certification
- The achievement positions JKIA, MIA, EIA, and KIA among the elite group of environmentally conscious airports in East and Central Africa.
- It underscores KAA’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, aligning with global best practices.
Future Plans
KAA plans to continue pursuing higher levels of certification under the ACA programme, reinforcing its dedication to reducing carbon emissions and adopting sustainable practices across all its operations.
This milestone reflects KAA’s leadership in promoting sustainability within the aviation sector, setting an example for other airports in the region.
