Jack Dorsey Launches Bitchat: A New Offline Messaging App Powered by Bluetooth

Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and current CEO of Block, has officially launched Bitchat, an innovative messaging app that functions without Wi-Fi, mobile data, or even a phone number. Designed for complete offline use, Bitchat utilizes Bluetooth mesh networking to enable secure peer-to-peer communication.

  • How Bitchat Works Without Internet or Data
  • Key Privacy and Security Features of Bitchat
  • Beta Launch and Future Features
  • Why Bitchat Matters in 2025

As global concerns over surveillance, censorship, and internet outages grow, Bitchat positions itself as a revolutionary tool for private, decentralized messaging.

How Bitchat Works Without Internet or Data

Unlike mainstream messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, or Signal, Bitchat doesn’t require any centralized server or cloud storage. Instead, it forms a Bluetooth mesh network using nearby devices.

Here’s how it works:

  • Messages hop from one device to another via Bluetooth.
  • The system uses a peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol to deliver messages across the mesh.
  • Communication is possible even during internet blackouts or government-imposed blocks.

Whether you’re at a music festival, protest, or remote location, Bitchat allows users to stay connected completely offline.

Key Privacy and Security Features of Bitchat

Bitchat is designed with privacy at its core. Here are its standout features:

  • 🔐 End-to-End Encryption: Messages are encrypted using Curve25519 and AES-GCM to ensure security.
  • 📵 No Phone Number or Email Needed: The app doesn’t require any personal information to sign up.
  • ☁️ No Central Server: Messages are never stored on company servers, reducing surveillance risks.
  • ⚠️ Panic Mode: A triple-tap automatically wipes all message data instantly.
  • ⏱️ Disappearing Messages: Chats are temporary and self-delete after delivery to the recipient.

Beta Launch and Future Features

Bitchat is currently in beta testing on iOS and has already filled its 10,000-user TestFlight quota. An Android version is in development, and future updates may include Wi-Fi Direct support—allowing offline media sharing like photos and videos.

The development team has also committed to transparency by making the Bitchat codebase and whitepaper open-source, inviting global developers to review, improve, and contribute to the project.

Why Bitchat Matters in 2025

With internet shutdowns on the rise and privacy under threat, Bitchat offers a timely alternative to traditional messaging platforms. It enables users to communicate freely and securely, even under restrictive digital environments.

As offline-first tools gain traction, Jack Dorsey’s Bitchat may signal a major shift toward decentralized, censorship-resistant communication for users around the world.
