The Iranian ambassador to Kenya, Ali Gholampour, has urged religious thinkers and leaders to embrace faith-based approaches in addressing violent extremist ideologies. Speaking at the Islam and Peace Conference held at the Iranian Cultural Council in Nairobi’s Parklands Plaza, the ambassador emphasized the importance of promoting peace, dialogue, and coexistence by fostering a correct understanding of religious ideologies.
The Role of Religion in Addressing Extremism
Ambassador Gholampour highlighted the misuse of religious teachings, particularly misinterpretations of Quranic verses, as a driving force behind the rise of extremist ideologies. He warned that isolating verses from their historical and situational context has allowed extremist groups to manipulate these teachings, tarnishing the image of Islam globally.
“War-seeking entities prioritise personal and group interests over collective human welfare. Now, more than ever, we must be vigilant and strive for a correct understanding of religious principles,” he stated.
He urged for a shift from conflict to cultural and religious dialogue, advocating for collaboration among religious thinkers to demystify religious philosophies and counteract extremist narratives.
Divine Teachings and Human Dignity
The ambassador underscored that divine religions, including Islam, have historically emphasized the dignity and value of humanity. He noted that these religions serve as guiding lights, leading humanity toward goodness and unity.
“Divine religions have always recognised the special value and dignity of humanity, considering mankind as the noblest of creations,” he said.
This recognition, he added, should inspire efforts to dismantle extremist ideologies and promote mutual respect among diverse communities.
Challenges of Religious Animosity
Ambassador Gholampour pointed to the growing religious animosity across the globe, attributing it to conspiracies and hidden agendas fueled by powerful entities. He called for vigilance and collective action to counter these forces by addressing the root causes of extremism through faith-based solutions.
He further emphasized that Muslim scholars and communities worldwide have condemned actions by extremist groups that misuse religious texts to justify violence.
Call to Action
The ambassador’s call resonates at a critical time when violent extremism continues to pose a significant threat to global peace and security. His address serves as a reminder of the potential for faith-based solutions to not only counter extremism but also foster a culture of understanding and dialogue.
Through platforms like the Islam and Peace Conference, religious thinkers, scholars, and leaders have the opportunity to collaborate in redefining the role of religion as a force for unity and peace.
