I&M Bank Uganda is a key player in Uganda’s financial sector, licensed by the Bank of Uganda to operate as a commercial bank. With its headquarters located at Plot 6/6A Kampala Road in Kampala’s central business district, the bank provides a wide range of commercial banking services to individuals, businesses, and non-governmental organizations.
Origins and Early Years
The bank traces its history to 1993, when it was founded as Orient Bank by a group of Ugandan businesspeople connected by family ties. It quickly established itself as a strong financial institution, with a reputation for stability and service.
In 2002, Orient Bank expanded by acquiring Trans-Africa Bank Limited, which had previously been declared insolvent by the Bank of Uganda. This move strengthened its asset base and widened its customer reach.
Shifts in Ownership
The first major ownership shift occurred in April 2009, when the Bank PHB Group of Nigeria acquired 80% shareholding in Orient Bank for US$62 million. However, just two years later in 2011, Bank PHB itself collapsed after being declared insolvent by the Central Bank of Nigeria. Its assets and some liabilities were later transferred to Keystone Bank Limited, owned by the Nigerian government.
The next big milestone came in July 2020, when I&M Holdings Limited, a financial services group based in Kenya, signed an agreement to acquire 90% equity in Orient Bank Limited. The deal, valued at over KSh 2 billion (US$20 million), was finalized on April 30, 2021, following regulatory approvals from the Bank of Uganda, Central Bank of Kenya, Capital Markets Authority of Kenya, and COMESA. This acquisition marked the official rebranding of Orient Bank into I&M Bank Uganda.
Services and Market Focus
I&M Bank Uganda offers a full spectrum of commercial banking solutions, with a special focus on providing services to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and their employees. Its portfolio includes personal banking, SME financing, corporate banking, and digital banking solutions tailored to Uganda’s growing financial landscape.
Branch Network and Presence
While the bank’s main branch is situated in Kampala’s business hub, I&M Bank Uganda has been expanding strategically across the country to serve different customer segments. It positions itself as a modern financial institution with emphasis on customer service, innovation, and regional integration.
Conclusion
From its beginnings as Orient Bank in 1993 to its transformation into I&M Bank Uganda under Kenyan ownership, the bank has weathered multiple transitions while maintaining relevance in Uganda’s dynamic banking sector. Today, it stands as a reliable financial partner offering services for both individuals and organizations, backed by the regional strength of I&M Holdings Limited.
