Terry Gene Bollea (August 11, 1953 – July 24, 2025), better known by his ring name Hulk Hogan, was an American professional wrestler, television personality, actor, and entrepreneur. Widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestling superstars of all time, Hogan’s charisma, showmanship, and larger-than-life persona made him one of the most recognizable figures in popular culture.
Known for his iconic Fu Manchu moustache, bandanas, and red-and-yellow attire, Hogan became the face of Hulkamania in the 1980s, headlining multiple WrestleMania events and driving the WWF’s (now WWE) expansion into mainstream entertainment. His career extended across WWF/WWE, WCW, TNA, AWA, and NJPW, where he collected world championships and revolutionized wrestling storytelling.
Early Life
Hogan was born in Augusta, Georgia, and raised in Port Tampa, Florida. Of Italian, Panamanian, Scottish, and French descent, he grew up fascinated with baseball and music before turning to bodybuilding and wrestling. He studied at Hillsborough Community College and the University of South Florida, eventually leaving school to pursue music with his band, Ruckus. His size and charisma caught the attention of wrestlers Jack and Gerald Brisco, who introduced him to trainer Hiro Matsuda, setting the foundation for his wrestling career.
Professional Wrestling Career
Early Years (1977–1983)
Hogan debuted in Championship Wrestling from Florida in 1977. Early ring names included Terry Boulder, Sterling Golden, and The Super Destroyer. His rising popularity grew in the Continental Wrestling Association and AWA, where he coined the term “Hulkamania” after starring in Rocky III (1982).
World Wrestling Federation (1983–1993)
Hogan’s return to the WWF in 1983 marked the explosion of Hulkamania. Defeating The Iron Sheik for the WWF Championship in 1984, Hogan became the top babyface, promoting his “three demandments”: train, say your prayers, and eat vitamins.
He headlined the first nine WrestleMania events, including the legendary WrestleMania III match where he bodyslammed André the Giant. Hogan’s reigns included six WWF Championships and back-to-back Royal Rumble victories in 1990 and 1991.
WCW and Hollywood Hogan (1994–2000)
In 1994, Hogan joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and became the company’s top star, winning the WCW World Heavyweight Championship six times. His shocking heel turn in 1996 as “Hollywood Hogan” and leadership of the New World Order (nWo) changed wrestling history, fueling the Monday Night Wars.
Later Career (2002–2013)
Hogan returned to WWE in 2002, defeating Triple H to win the Undisputed WWF Championship. He also wrestled The Rock, The Undertaker, and Vince McMahon in high-profile matches. He later joined TNA Wrestling, where he worked as both a performer and on-screen authority figure until 2013.
Outside Wrestling
Hogan appeared in films including Rocky III (1982), No Holds Barred (1989), Suburban Commando (1991), and Mr. Nanny (1993). He starred in the TV series Thunder in Paradise (1994) and the reality show Hogan Knows Best (2005–2007).
His ventures included restaurants, energy drinks, merchandise, and the launch of Real American Beer in 2024.
Controversies
Hogan faced controversies over steroid admissions, backstage politics, and the infamous Gawker sex tape scandal, which involved leaked racist remarks. The fallout tarnished his image, though he later returned to WWE and was reinstated into the Hall of Fame.
Personal Life
Hogan was married three times and had two children, Brooke and Nick. He remarried in 2023 to Sky Daily. He was open about his Christian faith and was baptized in 2023.
Health, Death, and Legacy
Years of wrestling took a toll on Hogan’s body, requiring multiple surgeries. On July 24, 2025, he died at his home in Clearwater, Florida, from a heart attack, aged 71.
Hogan’s death prompted widespread tributes from wrestlers, celebrities, and fans. Despite controversies, his legacy remains immense. Hulk Hogan is remembered as the face of wrestling’s golden era, a global superstar, and one of the most influential figures in sports entertainment.
