M-Kopa (M for mobile, kopa is Swahili for borrow) is an African connected asset financing platform that provides underbanked customers in Africa to essential products including solar lighting, televisions, fridges, smartphones & financial services. Business model and products

Customers pay a deposit of KSh. 3,500/= (approx US$35), take the system home then pay 50/= (approx US$0.50) a day for a period of one year, to own the solar system. Daily payments are made through M-Pesa, a mobile phone based money system, at about 45 cents a day. This way, in addition to getting solar power, customers also slowly off-set the cost of the device.[ As of 2015, after 12 months of regular payments, the solar system is fully owned by the customer who can use it for free access to solar energy.

According to the company, part of the business model’s plan is to offset the dangerous use of kerosene (paraffin) lamps to light homes that are off electric grids. The system also helps customers who need to charge batteries and mobile phones.

The company also provides an upgrade products that include; smartphones, water tanks and fridges. In 2018, the company launched SOLAPESA – a cash loans to existing customers

The company also has a dedicated and ring-fenced R&D unit, M-Kopa Labs, which deploys research grants to test new technology and extensions to the M-Kopa platform

M-Kopa is supported by a number of partners. Mobile network operators—like Safaricom—are partnering with M-Kopa to support mobile money and value-added services.  Manufacturers and brands are partnering to provide a platform for market entry, finance and last mile access. Payments companies like Mastercard and challenger banks see the disruptive power of the platform on traditional clicks and mortar banking.

Here is How To Pay For Your Mkopa Phone Via Mpesa

To pay for your Mkopa phone via Mpesa, follow the guide below.

1. Go to your Mpesa Menu

2. Select  Lipa na Mpesa

3. Select Paybill

4. Enter 333222 as the Business Number

5. Enter the ID Number you used to register for M-Kopa as the Account number

6. Enter the amount you would like to repay.

7. Enter your PIN and press OK.

You will receive a confirmation message from MPesa and M-Kopa once the payment is successful.

Note

  • Mkopa will deactivate your phone if you fail to make payments as agreed. Activating your phone requires repayment of more than one Credit Fee payment to unblock your account.
  • M-Kopa doesn’t accept cash payments.

What happens if you don’t pay for your M-Kopa product?

If you don’t pay for your product, M-Kopa may deactivate it until you clear the balance. This may also lead to being reported to the Credit Reference Bureau (CRB). Not paying your debt on time may also negatively affect your credit score, which could make it harder for you to access their products in the future.
