If you’re planning to study, work, immigrate, or conduct legal transactions abroad, you may need your Timorese documents legalized. This process—called attestation or apostille—verifies the authenticity of your documents for use in another country. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to get an apostille in Timor-Leste, whether you’re applying inside or outside the country.

  • Step 1: Identify the Documents You Need Legalized
  • Step 2: Apply In Person (Inside Timor-Leste)
  • Step 3: Apply In Person (Outside Timor-Leste)
  • Step 4: Wait for Processing and Notification

  • Application Fees

  • Why Legalize Your Documents?
  • Apostille vs. Attestation: What’s the Difference?
  • Helpful Tips

Step 1: Identify the Documents You Need Legalized

Common documents requiring attestation include:

  • Birth certificates
  • Academic certificates (high school, university degrees)
  • Marriage or divorce certificates
  • Medical or police clearance certificates
  • Citizenship or national ID documents
  • Power of attorney or affidavits

Make sure all your documents are in their final form, notarized if necessary, and translated if required by the destination country.

Step 2: Apply In Person (Inside Timor-Leste)

Visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Díli:

  • Book an appointment in advance
  • On your appointment day, go to the Ministry office
  • Request and fill in the official application form
  • Attach photocopies of all necessary documents
  • Submit everything with the application fee as instructed
  • You’ll receive SMS updates as your application progresses
  • The authority may request additional documents during review
  • Upon approval, you’ll receive your attested or apostilled documents by mail

Step 3: Apply In Person (Outside Timor-Leste)

If you’re abroad:

  • Contact the nearest Timor-Leste Embassy or Consulate
  • Schedule an appointment
  • Visit the consulate on your appointment date
  • Fill out the form and submit with required documents
  • Pay the relevant fee as instructed
  • You will be notified by SMS or email once your documents are ready

💡 Tip: Make sure all original documents and their copies are complete before submission. Incomplete applications are not accepted.

Step 4: Wait for Processing and Notification

  • Most applications are processed within 30 days
  • The timeframe depends on how complete your documents are
  • After legalization, you’ll be notified by email to collect the documents

Required Documents

To apply for attestation or apostille, prepare the following:

Application Fees

The cost of document legalization varies by document type and destination country. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs or embassy will provide the exact fee during application.

Validity

The validity of your attested or apostilled documents depends on the accepting country’s rules. If the document expires or is re-issued, the apostille loses its value and must be renewed.

Why Legalize Your Documents?

Legalization is required for:

  • University admissions abroad
  • Employment applications
  • Immigration and visa processing
  • Marriage registration in another country
  • Business incorporation or international contracts

Without a valid attestation, your documents may not be accepted internationally.

Apostille vs. Attestation: What’s the Difference?

  • Apostille is used when the destination country is part of the Hague Convention
  • Attestation is for countries not part of the Hague Convention
Timor-Leste provides both based on where your documents will be used.

Helpful Tips

✔ Ensure documents are notarized if required
✔ Provide accurate personal information
✔ Keep photocopies for your records
✔ Always confirm the country-specific requirements before applying
