How to Check Vehicle Inspection Status in Kenya

Step 1: Download the NTSA App

The NTSA app allows you to access a range of services, including vehicle inspection status. You can download it from the Google Play Store.

Step 2: Create a TIMS Account

If you don’t already have a TIMS (Transport Integrated Management Systems) account, you will need to create one. Follow these steps:

  1. Go to the TIMS registration page.
  2. On the right side of the Individuals tab, click Register.
  3. Enter your ID serial number (not the ID number) and click Verify.
  4. Enter your KRA PIN and mother’s maiden name.
  5. Provide your occupation and mobile number.
  6. Click the button next to the phone number to request a verification code.
  7. Enter the code sent to your phone.
  8. Once the code is entered, your account will be activated, and you can access your TIMS account.

Step 3: Check Vehicle Inspection Status

Once your TIMS account is active, you can easily check your vehicle’s inspection status:

  • Open the NTSA app and log in with your TIMS account.
  • Navigate to the Vehicle Inspection section.
  • You’ll be able to view your inspection progress, from booking to the inspection report.

Alternative Method: Use SMS

You can also check your vehicle’s inspection status via SMS. Here’s how:

  • You’ll receive a response with the status of your vehicle’s inspection.

How to Book a Vehicle Inspection

To book a vehicle inspection in Kenya, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the NTSA Website: Visit www.ntsa.go.ke or use the NTSA mobile app.
  2. Login to Your TIMS Account.
  3. Under the Motor Vehicle Inspection tab, select New Car Booking.
  4. Enter your vehicle’s registration number and select the vehicle type.
  5. For annual inspection booking, select the appropriate option.
  6. Choose your payment method and make payment (options include Mpesa, Airtel Money, debit/credit card, cash, or bank transfer).
  7. Once payment is complete, click on Complete and print your receipt.
  8. Choose the inspection station that is most convenient for you.
  9. Select a date and time for the inspection and submit your booking.
  10. Print your generic inspection booking slip.

Which Vehicles Are Taken for Inspection in Kenya?

The NTSA requires certain vehicles to undergo inspections, including:

  1. Private vehicles that are more than 4 years old must undergo inspection every two years.
  2. Commercial vehicles, public service vehicles, and school buses must undergo inspections both preregistration and annually thereafter.
  3. Imported vehicles are exempt from inspection for the first two years if they have been inspected by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) before importation.
  4. Vehicles with modifications, such as changes in height, width, or engine swaps, must undergo an inspection for modifications.
  5. Salvage vehicles must undergo a salvage inspection.
