Buying cryptocurrency in China has become significantly challenging due to stringent regulations imposed by the Chinese government. Since 2017, China has enforced a ban on cryptocurrency exchanges and Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) within its borders. These regulations aim to control financial risks and maintain financial stability. However, interest in digital currencies continues among Chinese residents who seek alternative investment opportunities and wish to engage with the global crypto market. This guide explores feasible ways to purchase cryptocurrencies in China despite the restrictions.

Understanding the Legal Context

Before proceeding, it’s crucial to understand that while trading and exchange operations are banned, possessing cryptocurrencies themselves is not illegal in China. This distinction allows individuals to hold and manage crypto as a personal asset.

Step 1: Use Offshore Exchanges

Chinese investors commonly resort to offshore cryptocurrency exchanges that are not based in mainland China but allow access to users globally. Here are a few platforms that are popular among Chinese users, offering services in languages including Chinese:

  • Binance (binance.com): Founded by a Chinese-Canadian business executive, Binance is one of the largest and most popular cryptocurrency exchanges globally. Although Binance withdrew its services from mainland China following the 2017 ban, it remains accessible to Chinese users through various means.
  • Huobi Global (huobi.com): Initially founded in China, Huobi now operates internationally and provides a comprehensive platform for trading a vast range of cryptocurrencies.
  • OKEx (okex.com): Also started in China and now operating internationally, OKEx offers a wide variety of trading services and has been a go-to for many Chinese traders.

Step 2: Accessing Offshore Exchanges

Accessing these platforms from China typically requires the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). VPNs help mask your IP address and encrypt your internet connection, allowing you to bypass geographical restrictions and maintain privacy.

  • Choosing a VPN: Select a reliable VPN provider that offers robust encryption and does not keep logs of user activity.
  • Connection: Install the VPN software on your device, connect to a server in a country where crypto exchanges are permitted, and then proceed to access the exchange website.

Step 3: Register and Verify Your Account

Once you’ve accessed an offshore exchange using a VPN:

  • Sign up for an account by providing your email address or mobile number.
  • Complete KYC verification if required by the exchange. This step may involve uploading identification documents, which can include a passport or a driver’s license.

Step 4: Deposit Funds

Funding your account might be challenging due to the Chinese government’s restrictions on financial transactions related to cryptocurrency:

  • Cryptocurrency Transfers: If you already possess cryptocurrency, you can transfer it to your new exchange wallet from another wallet.
  • Overseas Bank Accounts: If you have access to banking services outside of China, you might use these accounts to wire funds to the exchange.

Step 5: Purchase Cryptocurrency

With your account funded:

  • Navigate to the trading section of the exchange.
  • Select the cryptocurrency you wish to purchase.
  • Place an order: You can choose a market order for immediate purchase at current prices or a limit order to specify a price at which you are willing to buy.

Step 6: Secure Your Cryptocurrency

It’s advisable to transfer your cryptocurrencies into a secure wallet:

  • Hardware Wallets like Ledger (ledger.com) or Trezor (trezor.io) offer the highest security by storing cryptocurrencies offline.
  • Software Wallets provide more convenient access but are less secure against hacks.

Conclusion

While buying cryptocurrency in China involves navigating through various barriers due to regulatory restrictions, it remains possible through the use of offshore exchanges and VPNs. It’s essential to stay informed about the latest regulatory developments and practice caution, ensuring compliance with local laws and safeguarding your investments against potential risks.
