After being finished in 1931, the 240 km Nairobi-Nanyuki railway line passed through six counties: Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, and Laikipia.

Nairobi-Nanyuki Train Schedule

Every Friday at 9:00 am, this train to Nanyuki leaves from Nairobi Central Railway Station. It runs once a week. Taking into account the topography and the number of pauses the train makes at each station, the trip takes about seven hours1. Makadara, Dandora, Mwiki, Githurai, Kahawa West, Ruiru, Thika, Mitubiri, Makuyu, Maragua, Murang’a, Sagana, Karatina, Kiganjo, and Naromoru are among the places the rail stops.

How to book the Nairobi to Nanyuki train

Passengers are advised by Kenya Railways to arrive for check-in at least one hour early before the train departs. This gives you plenty of time to get tickets and get comfortable before the trip leaves.

Once you get to the Nairobi Central Railway Station, you can buy them. When traveling by rail, it is best to arrive early, especially during rush hour, or reserve your tickets in advance by calling 0115102558 or 0115169759.

Additionally, you can purchase your ticket via the eCitizen website. The official government paybill number 222222 is used for this.

  1. Go to Mpesa and select Lipa na Mpesa
  2. Select the Paybill option
  3. Enter paybill number 222222
  4. Enter Account number NRPK- “BTS Number”
  5. Enter the amount to be paid
  6. Enter your PIN and send

How much is from Nairobi to Nanyuki using a train?

First Class and Economy Class are the two classes available on the train. Economy Class costs Ksh 200, and First Class costs Ksh 1000. The destination and point of boarding affect the fee.
