Google Releases Fix for Chromecast Outage Issues

If your Chromecast stopped working after last week’s outage, a Chromecast fix update is now available. Google has officially released a firmware update to restore functionality for affected Chromecast (2nd Gen) and Chromecast Audio devices. However, if you reset your device during troubleshooting, you may need to update your Google Home app before setting up your Chromecast again.

How to Update Your Chromecast

To fix the issue, you must ensure your Chromecast is running the latest firmware version. Check your device to see if the update has been installed:

  • Chromecast (2nd Gen): Firmware version 1.56.467165
  • Chromecast Audio: Firmware version 1.56.467166

If your device is still outdated, follow these steps:

  1. Reboot your Chromecast to trigger the update.
  2. Update the Google Home app to version 3.30.1.6 (Android) or 3.30.106 (iOS).
  3. Check for firmware updates in the app and complete the setup process.

Factory Reset Users May Face Further Issues

Users who performed a factory reset before the fix was released may still experience problems setting up their Chromecast. Google has acknowledged this issue and is actively working on another update to resolve it. If you’re affected, keep checking the Google Play Store or Apple App Store for the latest Google Home app update.

Why Did the Chromecast Outage Happen?

The widespread failure was caused by an expired Google-owned device authentication certificate authority. To prevent this issue from happening again, the update moves Chromecast devices to a new certificate authority with an expiration date of 2045.

While Google has discontinued the Chromecast lineup in favor of the Google TV Streamer, this update suggests that the company is still providing software support for existing devices.

Final Thoughts

If your Chromecast fix update hasn’t arrived yet, be patient—the rollout may take a few days. Meanwhile, keep checking for updates and avoid factory resetting your device. Google has apologized for the disruption and is committed to ensuring all users can get back to streaming as soon as possible.
