Tires go flat more often than anyone would like. Changing a tire is necessary over the course of time and after it’s worn down. And unfortunately, a tire shop isn’t always open or close by when you need it. It’s good to know how to remove a tire from the rim for these instances.

When you have the right equipment, there’s no cost to remove the tire from the wheel. Fixing it might be another matter, though. Here, we’ll walk you through the process step by step, emphasizing the importance of doing it correctly, the tools you’ll need, common mistakes to avoid, and safety precautions to keep in mind.

Method 1: Removing the Tire by Hand

What You’ll Need:

  • Tire
  • Valve core removal tool
  • Vehicle (optional for breaking the bead)
  • Pry bar
  • Screwdriver
  • Dish soap, tire lube, or WD-40

Step 1: Remove the Valve Core

  • Locate the tire’s air valve (a small metal or rubber spoke).
  • Twist off the valve cap counterclockwise.
  • Use a valve core removal tool to twist the valve core counterclockwise and release all air from the tire.

Step 2: Break the Tire Bead

  1. By Driving: Place the tire flat on the ground and carefully drive a heavy vehicle over the rubber part of the tire, avoiding the rim. Repeat as needed until the bead loosens.
  2. By Hand or Jack: Use your weight or a car jack to press the rubber down until the bead separates from the rim.

Step 3: Secure the Tire

  • Place the tire on a stable surface like carpet or another tire to prevent sliding.
  • Stand or kneel on the sides of the tire to keep it from moving.

Step 4: Apply Lubricant

  • Use dish soap, tire lube, or WD-40 to lubricate the edge of the rim.
  • Spread the lubricant around the rim to reduce resistance.

Step 5: Pry the Tire Off the Rim

  • Push down on the rubber edge and insert a pry bar between the bead and the rim.
  • Lift the bead over the rim lip.
  • Use a screwdriver to work around the tire, prying the bead over the rim.

Step 6: Remove the Rim

  • Flip the tire over and repeat the prying process on the other side until the rim is free from the tire.

Method 2: Using a Manual Tire Changing Machine

What You’ll Need:

  • Manual tire changer
  • Plywood
  • 1⁄2 inch carriage bolts
  • Electric screwdriver
  • Tire
  • Dish soap or tire lube
  • Old T-shirt or rubber mat

Step 1: Secure the Tire Changer

  1. Trace the machine’s base on a piece of plywood.
  2. Drill holes and secure the machine to the plywood with bolts.
  3. For extra stability, attach the machine to a concrete floor using masonry bolts.

Step 2: Remove the Valve Core

  • Unscrew the valve cap and use a valve core removal tool to release all the air.

Step 3: Clamp the Tire

  • Position the tire on the machine with the front side facing up.
  • Secure the tire using the machine’s clamping mechanism.

Step 4: Break the Bead

  • Use the machine’s arm and changing rod to push the bead away from the rim.
  • Repeat on all sides of the tire.
  • Flip the tire and break the bead on the other side.

Step 5: Apply Lubricant

  • Spread dish soap or tire lube around the rim to make removal easier.

Step 6: Remove the Rim

  • Secure the tire on the changer’s central spoke.
  • Use the changing rod to lift the bead over the rim lip.
  • Work around the tire until the rim is free.
  • Repeat on the other side to fully remove the rim.

Pro Tips

  1. Protect the Rim: Place a cloth or rubber mat under the rim to prevent scratches.
  2. Professional Help: For stubborn tires, visit a mechanic or use a powered tire removal machine.
  3. Dispose of Old Tires: Take them to a recycling facility.

By following these methods, you’ll be able to remove a tire from a rim efficiently and with minimal effort.
