Equity Bank Temporarily Closes Select Branches to Honour Raila Odinga

Equity Bank has announced a temporary nationwide closure of selected branches to honour the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, whose funeral proceedings are underway this weekend. The bank’s decision comes as the country observes a national mourning period following Raila’s death on October 15, 2025, in India.

Closure Details and Affected Branches

In its official notice, Equity Bank confirmed that all branches would close on Friday, October 17, 2025, to pay tribute to the late statesman. Operations will resume on Saturday, October 18, with the exception of Kisumu City branches, which will remain closed for three days.

The affected Kisumu branches include:

  • Kisumu Angawa (Angawa Street)
  • Kisumu Supreme (Milimani, Okore Road)

According to the statement, the extended closure in Kisumu reflects the city’s deep connection to Raila Odinga’s legacy, given it is his political stronghold and hometown.

“Our branches in Kisumu City will remain closed on Saturday, 18th October 2025, in honour of the departed former Prime Minister, The Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, EGH,” Equity stated.

Digital Banking and 24/7 Access

Despite the physical branch closures, Equity Bank reassured customers that its digital and alternative banking channels will remain fully operational throughout the mourning period.

National Mourning and Public Holiday Declaration

The Kenyan government declared Friday, October 17, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late Raila Odinga. In a Gazette Notice issued by the Ministry of Interior, the day was set aside for national reflection on Raila’s contributions to democracy, human rights, and governance.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares Friday, the 17th of October 2025, a public holiday in honour of the departed former Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga,” the notice read.

The former Prime Minister reportedly collapsed during a morning walk in Koothattukulam, India, and was pronounced dead at Devamatha Hospital. His passing has since drawn messages of condolence from world leaders and institutions globally.

A Nation in Mourning

The temporary shutdown by Equity Bank symbolizes the widespread grief and respect across Kenya’s public and private sectors. Businesses, political leaders, and ordinary citizens continue to join hands in celebrating Raila’s lifetime of service — a man remembered not just for his politics, but for his enduring impact on Kenya’s democratic journey.
