Who Is Dilma Rousseff?

Dilma Vana Rousseff is a Brazilian economist and politician who served as the 36th President of Brazil, making history as the first woman to hold the office. Her estimated net worth stands at $1 million, a modest figure for someone who reached the highest political office in one of the world’s largest economies.

Her political journey, however, has been anything but ordinary—marked by revolutionary activism, imprisonment, and ultimately, impeachment.

Early Life and Political Awakening

Born in Belo Horizonte, Rousseff came from a well-off family, the daughter of a Bulgarian immigrant entrepreneur. Her privileged upbringing included classical studies, but her worldview changed drastically during her teenage years as Brazil fell under military dictatorship.

In the 1960s, she became involved in leftist guerrilla groups, including the Comando de Libertação Nacional (COLINA) and later the VAR-Palmares, opposing the dictatorship. Her militant activities led to her arrest in 1970, where she spent nearly three years in prison and was subjected to torture, including electrocution and physical abuse.

Rise to Prominence

After her release, Rousseff returned to civilian life, earned a degree in economics, and built a career in public service and energy policy. Her rise in politics began in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, where she held multiple government roles.

Her national recognition grew under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who appointed her as:

  • Minister of Mines and Energy (2003–2005)
  • Chief of Staff of Brazil (2005–2010)

Known for her technocratic style and strong work ethic, she became Lula’s chosen successor, despite never having held elected office before.

Presidency (2011–2016)

In 2010, Rousseff won the presidential election, becoming Brazil’s first female president. She was re-elected in 2014, defeating center-right candidate Aécio Neves in a tight race.

Key Highlights of Her Presidency:

  • Oversaw preparations and hosting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Rio Olympics
  • Maintained social welfare programs that lifted millions out of poverty
  • Faced a declining economy, rising inflation, and a major corruption scandal (Operation Car Wash) involving Petrobras, the state oil company

Impeachment and Removal

In 2016, Rousseff was impeached by the Brazilian Congress, accused of manipulating government accounts to hide fiscal deficits. While she denied any wrongdoing and claimed it was a coup, the Senate ultimately voted to remove her from office. She retained her political rights, unlike in traditional impeachment cases.

Life After Presidency

Since her removal, Rousseff has kept a low political profile. She continues to advocate for democracy, economic equality, and Latin American cooperation. In 2023, she was appointed President of the New Development Bank (BRICS Bank), a move supported by President Lula and BRICS member nations.

Personal Life

  • Marital Status: Divorced from fellow activist and politician Carlos Araújo
  • Children: One daughter, Paula
  • Health: A cancer survivor—diagnosed with lymphoma in 2009, successfully treated

Summary

Dilma Rousseff’s net worth of $1 million reflects a career built more on public service than personal enrichment. Her legacy remains divisive: seen by supporters as a symbol of resistance and progress, and by critics as a technocrat who mishandled a turbulent economy. Nevertheless, her life story—marked by sacrifice, resilience, and trailblazing leadership—secures her place in Brazil’s political history.
