DFCU Bank Uganda: Growth, Ownership, and Financial Performance

DFCU Bank Uganda is one of the most prominent commercial banks in Uganda, known for its significant contribution to the country’s financial growth and development. Since its establishment, the bank has positioned itself as a trusted financial partner for individuals, businesses, and institutions across East Africa.

Founded in 1964 as the Development Finance Company of Uganda Limited, the institution was created to support Uganda’s economic development. Over time, it transformed into a fully-fledged commercial bank, expanding its services to meet the evolving needs of its clientele. Strategic acquisitions, including Gold Trust Bank and Global Trust Bank, boosted its market presence and reach.

As of June 30, 2020, DFCU Bank Uganda reported total assets worth UGX 3.442 trillion (US$939 million) and shareholders’ equity of UGX 599.65 billion (US$163.54 million). These figures highlight its financial strength and steady growth trajectory.

The bank operates through an extensive network of 67 branches and more than 100 ATMs across Uganda, ensuring that customers from diverse backgrounds have access to reliable financial services. Its wide coverage has helped it solidify its role as a national financial powerhouse.

Ownership plays a key role in the bank’s stability. DFCU Bank is a subsidiary of DFCU Limited, whose major shareholders include Arise BV, the Investment Fund for Developing Countries (IFU), and the National Social Security Fund of Uganda (NSSF). These stakeholders have provided both capital and governance strength, enabling the bank to maintain competitiveness and confidence among its customers.
