Centenary Bank Uganda is one of the country’s most respected financial institutions, with a strong legacy of supporting rural development and financial inclusion. Established in 1985 as the Centenary Rural Development Trust (CRDT), it evolved into a fully licensed commercial bank that continues to empower individuals, farmers, and small businesses.
The bank was founded with a clear mission: to bring financial services to underserved rural communities. Over the decades, it has grown from a small trust into a full-fledged bank that balances commercial growth with social impact.
Banking Services and Development Initiatives
Centenary Bank has consistently supported the Ugandan agricultural sector through loans to rural farmers, agricultural processors, small traders, and local manufacturers. In 2011, it partnered with the World Bank Group to strengthen agricultural lending. Later, in 2017, it collaborated with Mastercard to roll out innovative mobile banking solutions, making banking accessible to more Ugandans.
In 2021, Centenary Bank introduced the Cente Platinum Mastercard, designed to meet the needs of premium clients with enhanced convenience and security. These strategic initiatives highlight its focus on modern banking technologies while staying true to its rural development mission.
Branch Network and Financial Strength
As of December 2021, Centenary Bank Uganda had built a robust presence with 63 branches and 157 ATMs across the Central, Western, Northern, and Eastern regions of Uganda. The bank served over 1.49 million deposit accounts, reflecting its deep reach among Ugandan communities.
Its financial strength is equally impressive, with total assets valued at UGX 4.8 trillion (US$1.359 billion) and shareholders’ equity of UGX 789.52 billion (US$222.78 million). This positions Centenary Bank as one of Uganda’s largest and most influential banks in terms of both reach and assets.
Commitment to Financial Inclusion
Beyond profits, Centenary Bank has remained dedicated to microfinance, providing access to credit for people who would otherwise be excluded from the traditional banking system. By prioritizing rural farmers, traders, and entrepreneurs, the bank has become a trusted partner in driving Uganda’s economic growth.
Its customer-focused strategy has helped bridge the gap between rural communities and formal banking, making it a cornerstone of Uganda’s financial inclusion agenda.
