Denza: BYD’s Luxury EV Brand

Denza (腾势) is a Chinese luxury electric vehicle (EV) brand headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong. Founded in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD Auto and Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz Group), Denza was restructured in 2021, with BYD increasing its stake to 90%. By September 2024, BYD acquired Mercedes-Benz’s final 10% share, making Denza a wholly owned BYD subsidiary.

Positioned as BYD’s premium EV division, Denza has expanded its lineup with MPVs, SUVs, and luxury sedans, while entering Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Middle East in 2024–2025.

History and Evolution

  • 2010: Established as Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology Co., Ltd., with equal stakes from BYD and Daimler.
  • 2014: Launched its first EV, the Denza EV, a luxury electric car targeted at Chinese cities with government subsidies.
  • 2018–2020: Released updated models like the Denza 500 and the Denza X SUV, designed with strong Mercedes-Benz styling input.
  • 2021: Mercedes-Benz reduced its stake to 10%, leaving BYD with 90% control. The brand restructured as Shenzhen Denza New Energy Vehicle Co., Ltd.
  • 2022: Denza introduced the D9 luxury MPV, marking the beginning of a new generation of premium EVs.
  • 2023–2024: New models followed, including the N7 SUV, N8 SUV, and Z9 luxury car. Denza also expanded dealerships across China and launched in Hong Kong.
  • 2024–2025: Became a fully owned BYD brand. Expanded globally with the Z9 GT fastback in Europe and B5/B8 SUVs in the Middle East.

Products and Models

Denza’s lineup emphasizes luxury, advanced technology, and long-range performance. Current models include:

  • Denza D9 (2022–present): A full-size MPV available in BEV and PHEV variants, popular with executives and families.
  • Denza N7 (2023–present): A mid-size luxury SUV offering BYD’s latest EV platform.
  • Denza N8L (upcoming): A large SUV in PHEV format, based on the earlier Denza X.
  • Denza N9 (2025–present): A premium full-size SUV with hybrid power.
  • Denza Z9/Z9 GT (2024–present): Flagship full-size sedans and fastbacks, combining luxury with electric performance.
  • Denza B5/B8 (2025–present): Adventure-oriented SUVs introduced for the Middle East, rebranded from BYD’s Fangchengbao series.

Global Expansion

After focusing on the Chinese domestic market for over a decade, Denza began export operations in 2024.

  • Southeast Asia: Entered markets like Thailand and Singapore.
  • Hong Kong: Right-hand drive D9 EV launched in mid-2024 with the brand’s first flagship showroom.
  • Europe: Official brand launch in April 2025 in Milan, Italy, with the Z9 GT as its first offering.
  • Middle East: Introduced SUVs B5 and B8 in August 2025, targeting luxury SUV demand.

Position in BYD’s Portfolio

As part of BYD Auto’s multi-brand strategy, Denza represents the premium-luxury segment, sitting above the mass-market BYD brand and below ultra-luxury Yangwang. While Yangwang targets the million-yuan segment, Denza fills the family and executive luxury space, directly competing with Lexus, Mercedes-Benz EQ models, and BMW i series in China and abroad.

Conclusion

From its origins as a BYD–Mercedes joint venture to becoming a wholly owned BYD luxury EV division, Denza has rapidly evolved into a global contender in the premium electric vehicle space. With models like the D9 MPV and Z9 GT sedan, Denza is reshaping expectations for Chinese luxury EVs, offering design, technology, and affordability that appeal to both domestic and international markets.
