Narok International Airport is finally under construction, three months after President William Ruto officially launched the project. On Monday, July 21, Narok Senator Ledama Olekina confirmed that contractors and engineers had arrived on-site to begin ground works. These include runway tarmacking, power installations, and fencing.
According to the main contractor, the Narok International Airport project should be completed within a year. Senator Olekina pledged to monitor progress closely to ensure timelines are met. “Officially, the construction is beginning today. I will be here constantly to ensure this project is completed. We thank the president and ministries involved for their support,” he stated.
The senator also urged Narok County to fast-track the tendering of terminal buildings. He emphasized that the project would boost economic growth, create jobs, and enhance tourism. “By next year, we will have direct flights from Europe bringing thousands of tourists. This shows we are committed to development, not politics,” he added.
During his visit to Narok on May 6, President Ruto announced that the project would be a joint venture between the national and county governments, with each contributing Ksh700 million. The president stressed that the facility would ease travel to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, one of the world’s top tourism destinations.
“Tourists from across Kenya and the world should have an international airport here. This will enhance Maasai Mara’s capacity to generate more resources and revenue for the people of Narok County,” President Ruto remarked.
The Narok International Airport is expected to transform regional tourism by providing direct access to Maasai Mara, a globally recognized wildlife haven. With its completion, the airport will serve as a major gateway for international tourists, bolstering Kenya’s economy while uplifting local livelihoods.
