OpenAI’s Custom AI Chip Plans

According to Reuters, the company is finalizing its first in-house AI chip, which will be manufactured by TSMC using 3-nanometer technology. The chip will feature high-bandwidth memory and advanced networking, optimized for OpenAI’s AI models. Mass production is expected to begin in 2026.
Intel’s Struggles and Strategic Shift
While competitors ramp up AI investments, Intel is struggling to regain its footing. After reporting a $16.6 billion loss in Q3 2024, Intel has been forced to restructure and simplify its operations. The company recently canceled one of its AI chip projects and announced that its chipmaking foundries lost $13.4 billion in 2024 alone. CEO Pat Gelsinger abruptly stepped down, signaling a turbulent future for the chip giant.
AMD and Microsoft’s AI Hardware Push
AMD is aggressively targeting Nvidia with its MI300 and MI325X AI chips, claiming they can outperform Nvidia’s H200 in AI workloads. Meanwhile, Microsoft is deepening its AI hardware push, with reports indicating that the company may soon challenge Google’s TPUs with custom-built AI accelerators.
