Bunyore Girls High School, established in 1905, is one of Kenya’s prestigious national girls’ secondary schools located in Emuhaya Constituency, Vihiga County. The school has earned a stellar reputation for academic excellence, particularly in science, and is known for consistently posting impressive results in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.
History of Bunyore Girls High School
The school was founded by Cramer Missionaries from South Africa as a commercial training centre for girls. Initially, the school offered education in needlework, arithmetic, religion, English, and vernacular, all with a strong emphasis on Christian discipline and domestic skills.
The early years focused on communal living, where girls taught Sunday school in nearby villages. In 1930, under the leadership of Mrs. Twyla Ludwig, the school was renamed from Kima Girls School to Bunyore Girls School, marking its shift towards a local identity.
By 1944, Bunyore had evolved into a fully-fledged primary and intermediate school, incorporating a nearby boys’ school. However, in 1952, the boys were moved to form Kima Primary School, leaving Bunyore to focus solely on girls’ education.
In 1964, Bunyore transitioned into a secondary school, and its first Form Four candidates graduated in 1967. Priscilla Were, who served as the school’s principal for 17 years beginning in 1974, played a significant role in shaping the school’s development.
Bunyore Girls continues to produce successful alumni, including Alice Amwomo Wako, the mother of former Attorney-General Amos Wako, who taught at the school alongside her husband, Daniel Wako.
KCSE Performance
Bunyore Girls High School has consistently ranked among Kenya’s top 200 schools in terms of academic performance. In the 2022 KCSE, the school achieved an outstanding mean score of 8.61, a testament to its commitment to academic excellence.
As a Cluster One (I) national school, Bunyore Girls is recognized for its exceptional infrastructure, academic performance, and qualified staff, making it one of the leading institutions in the country.
School Fees
Bunyore Girls falls under Cluster One in the Ministry of Education’s 2020 guidelines for national schools, with an official annual fee cap of approximately Ksh 75,798 per student.
However, fees may vary slightly due to additional levies approved by the school’s Board of Management (BoM), covering uniforms, co-curricular activities, motivational programs, and infrastructure development. These adjustments are in line with government policy and Ministry of Education regulations.
