Bill Sellanga (born 1980s), popularly known by his stage name Blinky Bill, is a Kenyan musician, producer, DJ, and cultural innovator based in Nairobi. He rose to prominence as a co-founder of the Kenyan art and music collective Just A Band before establishing himself as a solo artist blending Afropop, electronic music, hip-hop, and funk.
Early Life and Stage Name
Blinky Bill adopted his stage name after seeing his given name in a newspaper and considering it too plain. He drew inspiration from the Australian cartoon “Blinky Bill,” which had also been his nickname in high school.
Just A Band and Breakthrough (2006–2012)
While studying at Kenyatta University, Blinky Bill met Daniel Muli and Jim Chuchu. Together, they formed Just A Band, an experimental Kenyan art and music collective known for combining music, visual art, and technology.
- In 2006, the group released their first EP The Light Fantastic.
- Their debut album, Scratch to Reveal (2008), introduced their eclectic sound.
- In 2009, they followed with 82, a critically acclaimed record.
- Their 2010 music video Ha-He went viral and is widely regarded as Kenya’s first viral video, marking a turning point for the local creative industry.
- Their third album, Sorry for the Delay (2012), cemented their status as pioneers in African alternative music.
Just A Band became influential not only for their music but also for pushing boundaries in visual arts, digital culture, and storytelling.
Solo Career
After Just A Band’s projects slowed, Blinky Bill launched a successful solo career:
- We Cut Keys While You Wait (2016): His debut solo EP, showcasing his experimental approach to sound and rhythm.
- Everyone’s Just Winging It And Other Fly Tales (2018): His first full-length solo album, featuring standout tracks like Feeling It, which appeared on the soundtrack of the Kenyan film Rafiki. The record blended global sounds with African identity, earning international recognition.
- We Cut Keys 2 (2024): His sophomore solo album, expanding his exploration of Afro-electronic fusion.
