Billionaire Who Owns Company Behind Pro Gas and Sea Gas

Muhammed Jaffer, a prominent Kenyan billionaire, is the founder of Africa Gas and Oil (AGOL), the parent company of Proto Energy Limited. Proto Energy is Kenya’s leading provider of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and is well-known for selling brands like Pro Gas, Sea Gas, and Oto Gas. The company operates across Kenya, supplying LPG solutions for homes, businesses, and transport.

Jaffer, born in Mombasa in 1948, is also the Chairman of MJ Group, one of Kenya’s largest conglomerates, with interests spanning logistics, energy, LPG, grain handling, and port operations across East Africa.

From Humble Beginnings to Business Success

Muhammed Jaffer’s entrepreneurial journey began with adversity, as he had to start from scratch multiple times. In the early years, Jaffer had to overcome significant obstacles, including the failure of his first business venture. Despite the challenges, his resilience led him to become one of Kenya’s most influential business figures.

In 1968, after completing his education, Jaffer joined his father in an insurance brokerage business. However, by 1974, he faced a setback when his business partner took over everything they had built. Jaffer started again, initially with Ksh 20,000 and ventured into pallet manufacturing until 1983.

The Shift to Grain Handling

Jaffer’s turning point came during the early 1980s, when his pallet business slowed down. He pivoted to the container business, leading to the creation of Grain Bulk Handlers Ltd (GBHL). Jaffer identified a gap in the market for bulk grain handling at the Port of Mombasa, specifically for countries like Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Sudan.

In 2000, Grain Bulk Handlers Ltd began operations, quickly becoming the sole operator for mechanical bulk grain handling at the Port of Mombasa. This specialized facility revolutionized grain handling in East Africa, improving efficiency and reducing waste. GBHL also facilitated easy access for trucks, helping to alleviate road congestion at the port.

Proto Energy and Its Growth

Beyond grain handling, Jaffer ventured into the energy sector, founding Proto Energy Ltd, which has become one of the largest providers of LPG in Kenya. The company offers a range of LPG products, including Pro Gas, Sea Gas, and Oto Gas, and has a significant presence across Kenya. Proto Energy’s focus is on providing clean, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions, which aligns with Kenya’s broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting renewable energy sources.

MJ Group: A Powerful Conglomerate

MJ Group, Jaffer’s flagship company, is a diversified conglomerate with investments in grain handling, logistics, energy, port operations, and LPG. Established in the 1990s, the group has grown into one of Kenya’s largest companies, valued at approximately Ksh 16.3 billion. Jaffer’s leadership has seen the company expand its operations across East Africa, providing vital services in sectors like cargo handling and energy.

In April 2023, MJ Group launched a new grain-handling and storage terminal in Embakasi, Nairobi, a facility that aims to address food security in Kenya. The terminal will enable millers and manufacturers to handle and transport grain more efficiently, further solidifying Jaffer’s influence in both the logistics and energy sectors.

Philanthropy and Social Impact

Apart from his business ventures, Jaffer is also known for his contributions to philanthropy and community development. He has supported numerous charitable initiatives, particularly those focused on education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability.

Conclusion

Muhammed Jaffer’s journey from humble beginnings to business magnate reflects his resilience, vision, and dedication to creating lasting change in Kenya and East Africa. As the founder of Proto Energy, the company that powers Pro Gas and Sea Gas, Jaffer has made a significant impact on Kenya’s energy sector. Through MJ Group and his various ventures, he continues to shape the future of Kenya’s infrastructure, logistics, and energy industries, contributing to the economic growth of the region.
