Biden Vows to Stay in Race Amid Growing Calls for Him to Step Aside

US President Joe Biden is adamant about continuing his 2024 re-election bid despite increasing pressure from within his own party to step aside. On Friday, Biden expressed his determination to stay in the race, stating he looks forward to “getting back on the campaign trail next week.”

Political Pressure and Inner Circle Discussions

Reports have emerged of conflicting discussions within Biden’s inner circle regarding his future in the race. In recent weeks, Biden has faced mounting calls from Democratic leaders to withdraw, a loss of major donors, and concerns about the potential impact on the party’s control of Congress. On Friday alone, over a dozen Democratic lawmakers urged him to step aside.

Kamala Harris and Campaign Officials Speak Out

Vice President Kamala Harris, seen as the top contender to replace Biden, reassured worried donors during a call that she believed in the campaign’s success. “We know which candidate in this election puts the American people first: Our president, Joe Biden,” she said.

Jen O’Malley Dillon, Biden’s re-election campaign chair, appeared on MSNBC to dispel speculation about Biden’s withdrawal. She emphasized Biden’s commitment to defeating Donald Trump, describing him as the “best person” for the job.

Biden’s Statement and Political Context

Biden addressed former President Trump’s speech at the Republican National Convention, highlighting the importance of exposing the threats posed by Trump and making a case for his own record. “Together, as a party and as a country, we can and will defeat him at the ballot box,” Biden asserted.

Currently under quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19, Biden insisted in a recent interview that only a serious medical condition would prompt him to reconsider his campaign. A campaign memo released on Friday reinforced his intention to remain in the race.

Democratic Party Dynamics

The Democratic National Convention is scheduled for August 19, with the Democratic National Committee expected to nominate Biden as the official party nominee in early August. The DNC rules committee met to discuss procedures for the virtual roll-call vote, noting that any challenger would need the verified support of hundreds of delegates, a requirement that is nearly insurmountable given Biden’s primary victories.

Growing Calls for Biden to Step Aside

Despite Biden’s resolve, the pressure from within the party continues to mount. Democratic Senators Martin Heinrich, Jon Tester, and Congressman Jim Costa have all called for Biden to step aside. Other House members, including Jared Huffman, Marc Veasey, Chuy Garcia, and Mark Pocan, echoed these sentiments in a joint statement.

Senior Democratic leaders such as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have also reportedly expressed concerns privately. Publicly, Pelosi’s staff has insisted her comments were misrepresented, while Jeffries has affirmed his support for Biden.

Donor and Public Support

Biden has lost support from some prominent donors, including actor George Clooney and Disney family heiress Abigail Disney. However, he still has significant backing from key figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Congressional Hispanic and Black Caucuses.

Looking Ahead

Despite the growing calls for his withdrawal, Biden remains focused on his campaign, with plans for his next rally in Charlotte, North Carolina, on July 24. As the Democratic Party navigates these turbulent times, the stakes of the upcoming election and the potential impacts on the party’s future remain at the forefront of the political discourse.

This article provides an overview of the current political climate surrounding President Biden’s re-election campaign, detailing the internal pressures and public statements that shape the narrative as the 2024 election approaches.
