Agoro Sare High School, located in Oyugis, Homa Bay County, is a leading extra-county boys’ school with a legacy that dates back to 1963. Established under the visionary leadership of Principal J.E. Mbori and Board Chair Gedeon M. Abon’g, the school began with a single stream and quickly rose in prominence. The institution attracted national attention from the start, with President Jomo Kenyatta donating funds for dormitory construction the same year it opened, and Vice President Daniel Moi officially commissioning it in 1968.
Initially focused on Arts, Agoro Sare expanded into A-Level studies by 1971 and eventually adopted the 8-4-4 curriculum, later integrating the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The school has grown to host over 2,300 students and has been led by 17 administrators over its six-decade existence.
Agoro Sare High School is known not only for its infrastructure and growth but also for producing distinguished alumni such as Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, and KUPPET Executive Secretary Akello Misori. These leaders reflect the school’s strong foundation in academic excellence and civic responsibility.
The school’s KCSE performance continues to attract national attention. In the 2020 exams, Agoro Sare produced Kenya’s top student, Wasonga Udoma. The 2024 cohort maintained that legacy with a stellar mean score of 9.1754. Out of 553 candidates, one student scored a straight A, 65 scored A-, and 98% of candidates met the university entry threshold under full government sponsorship. Such consistent excellence places Agoro Sare among Kenya’s premier secondary schools.
The annual fee per student is approximately Ksh40,535, in line with government regulations for extra-county schools. However, additional charges may apply for co-curricular activities, uniforms, and development programs, pushing the total closer to Ksh60,000 in some cases.
For prospective parents, students, or alumni looking to reconnect, the school is situated along the Kisii-Kisumu Highway in Oyugis town, within Kasipul Constituency.
