They store water in dry seasons. They protect coastlines. They give papyrus, reeds, mangroves, grazing land, and tourism opportunities to communities.
From Yala Swamp to Lorian Swamp, from Ondiri Swamp to Lake Amboseli, from Dunga Wetland to Tana River Delta, from Sabaki Delta to the Rift Valley lakes, Kenya’s wetlands show that some of the country’s most important ecosystems are also among its most fragile.
Their future depends on wise use. Kenya must know where its wetlands are, protect the most important ones, restore degraded areas, control pollution, and ensure communities benefit from conservation.
A wetland is not wasteland. It is water, life, memory, livelihood, and biodiversity held together in one living landscape.
