The vice-president of Zambia holds the second-highest position in the executive branch and is the successor to the presidency if the president cannot serve. The role was historically an appointed position until the 2016 constitutional amendment, which introduced a system where the vice-president is elected as a running mate to the president. Thus, when the president is unable to continue, the vice-president automatically assumes office without the need for a separate election.
Additionally, the vice-president leads the Office of the Vice-President, which functions as a government ministry, and is a member of the National Assembly.
