American film mogul Tyler Perry is facing a $260 million lawsuit filed by actor Derek Dixon, who has accused him of sexual assault, harassment, and workplace misconduct. The lawsuit, filed on June 13 in Los Angeles Superior Court, stems from Dixon’s time as a series regular on Perry’s hit drama The Oval and its spinoff Ruthless.
Allegations by Derek Dixon
Dixon, who played the character Dale, alleges that Perry exploited his influence in Hollywood to create a coercive environment. Court filings claim Perry initially promised Dixon career opportunities, including producing his pilot and casting him in other shows. Dixon asserts these promises were tied to alleged sexual advances, which he refused.
The two reportedly met in 2019 during the launch of Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. Dixon says Perry began texting him, offering professional help while also making personal overtures. After Dixon accepted a role on The Oval, he quit his events job, but claims Perry’s alleged behavior escalated—citing incidents of groping, sexual propositions, and unwanted advances.
Specific Incidents Outlined in the Lawsuit
One alleged episode in 2020 describes Perry climbing into Dixon’s bed after a night of drinking. Another claims Perry groped Dixon in a trailer on set. Dixon also accuses Perry of inappropriate behavior during a trip to the Bahamas and while staying at Perry’s guesthouse in 2021, where he says he locked himself in a bathroom overnight out of fear.
Dixon alleges that when he resisted, Perry retaliated by writing his character into violent storylines and leaving his role uncertain. He further claims broken promises, including the failure to produce his show, left him financially and emotionally devastated. According to the suit, he lost an estimated $400,000 in income, suffered depression and PTSD, and was ultimately forced to quit The Oval.
Tyler Perry’s Response
Perry’s attorney, Matthew Boyd, has strongly denied the accusations, calling them “fabricated.” He said, “Dixon is someone who got close to Tyler Perry for what now appears to be nothing more than setting up a scam. Tyler will not be shaken down.”
Broader Context
The case has stirred major discussion across Hollywood and global media, highlighting the ongoing scrutiny of power dynamics within the entertainment industry. Perry, known for creating Tyler Perry Studios and producing numerous hit films and TV shows, now faces one of the most serious legal challenges of his career.
As the legal process unfolds, the lawsuit is set to be closely watched, not just for its financial implications, but for what it may reveal about workplace culture in Hollywood productions.
