Stretching majestically along the western skyline of Lake Baringo, the Tugen Hills—also known as the Kamasia Hills—are among Kenya’s most scenic and scientifically significant mountain ranges. The drive from Marigat to Kabarnet, a thrilling 47-kilometer ascent of winding, scenic roads, offers travelers the best panoramic views of the Tugen Hills. This dramatic route takes visitors from the hot, dusty plains of the Rift Valley through lush slopes to the cool highlands above Kabarnet. The landscape transitions rapidly—from acacia-studded savannas to fertile, forested ridges—showcasing the diverse beauty of Baringo’s terrain.
Culturally, the Tugen community—after whom the hills are named—holds this landscape in deep reverence. The hills are regarded as both a spiritual and cultural heartland, dotted with ancestral sites and stories passed down through generations. Neighboring groups such as the Njemps and Pokot also share a sense of connection and respect for the land.
Beyond their cultural value, the Tugen Hills hold immense paleoanthropological importance. The range preserves ancient sedimentary deposits dating between 14 and 4 million years, making it one of the few places in Africa that documents such a long and continuous geological record. Excavations led by Dr. Richard Leakey in 1967 uncovered crucial fossils and tools that have contributed to understanding human and animal evolution. The discovery of Orrorin tugenensis, one of the earliest known human ancestors, further cemented the Tugen Hills’ status as a global scientific treasure.
From the Kabarnet viewpoint, travelers can admire steep gullies plunging toward the Kerio Valley, with the isolated Kimng’ochoch outcrop standing proudly above the ridges.
