The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (Chinese: 香港上海滙豐銀行有限公司), also known as HSBC, is the Asia-Pacific subsidiary of the global HSBC banking group. Commonly referred to as HongkongBank (Chinese: 滙豐), this Hong Kong-based entity served as the parent company of the HSBC Group until 1991. It remains the largest bank in Hong Kong, operating branches and offices throughout the Indo-Pacific region and worldwide. HSBC is one of three commercial banks licensed by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority to issue banknotes for the Hong Kong dollar.

Founding and Early History

HSBC was established in 1865 in British Hong Kong, incorporating as “The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation” in 1866. Its uninterrupted presence in Hong Kong has made it the founding member of the HSBC group of companies. The bank became one of the leading subsidiaries of London-based HSBC Holdings PLC in 1990 and is recognized for its extensive range of banking services.

Branches and Services With around 220 branches, HSBC is a leading provider of a variety of financial products and services in Hong Kong. Its traditional banking activities include retail, commercial, corporate, investment, private, and global banking. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, it adopted the name HongkongBank locally and referred to ATMs as Electronic Teller Card (ETC) machines.

Headquarters HSBC’s Hong Kong headquarters, at No. 1 Queen’s Road Central, were designed by British architect Norman Foster. At the time of its construction, it was the most expensive building globally based on usable floor area. It housed HSBC Holdings PLC until the firm’s move to London in 1992.

Hong Kong Dollar Banknotes HSBC issues banknotes for the Hong Kong dollar alongside the Bank of China (Hong Kong) and Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong). HSBC is the leading issuer of Hong Kong dollars, with its notes comprising 67.7% of the currency in circulation.

  • Hang Seng Bank: HSBC holds a controlling interest in Hang Seng Bank, and the Hong Kong stock market index is named after this entity.
  • PayMe: A social payment app launched in 2017, PayMe is available for both HSBC and non-HSBC users.
  • HSBC Insurance: Offering insurance services across Asia-Pacific.

Asia-Pacific Operations

HSBC operates over 600 offices in 20 countries in Asia-Pacific. The regional subsidiary oversees HSBC entities in countries like Australia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan, and India. Additionally, HSBC manages stakes in several regional financial institutions.

Bangladesh HSBC Bangladesh operates primarily in urban centers, focusing on services like consumer and commercial banking. Its help center provides 24-hour customer support, and the bank supports educational initiatives.

China With a branch office in Shanghai since 1865, HSBC now owns stakes in several regional banks, including a 19.9% share in Bank of Communications.

India HSBC India is a fast-growing entity, offering comprehensive domestic and global banking services.

Japan HSBC maintains a presence in Japan, focusing on investment banking and offering specialized services to high-net-worth clients.

New Zealand A branch of the original corporation, HSBC New Zealand, offers a range of financial products across nine offices.

Philippines With a history dating back to 1875, HSBC operates branches in key Philippine cities like Cebu and Davao.

Singapore HSBC Singapore operates a comprehensive banking network, and its flagship office remains at the original Collyer Quay site.

South Korea HSBC has a significant presence in South Korea, with 11 branches operating since 1897.

Sri Lanka Since opening in Colombo in 1892, HSBC has maintained leadership in corporate banking and credit card issuance.

Taiwan HSBC Taiwan has expanded to eight branches, and its 2007 acquisition of The Chinese Bank increased its network to 47 branches.

Thailand In Thailand, HSBC provides corporate banking services after closing its retail operations in 2012.

Vietnam HSBC holds a significant share in Techcombank and Bao Viet Holdings, solidifying its presence in Vietnam with branches and representative offices.
