Soaring Fast Food Prices Are Causing Adults to Switch to Kids’ Meals, Study Says

A recent study by Lightspeed Commerce has revealed a surprising trend: more adults are turning to kids’ meals at fast food restaurants, and it’s not just for nostalgia. According to the study, 44% of surveyed adults in the US admit to ordering from a kids’ menu, with budget-friendliness being the primary reason for the shift. This shift comes at a time when fast food prices have skyrocketed, prompting many consumers to find more affordable meal options.

  • Rising Fast Food Prices and Changing Consumer Behavior
  • Adults Aren’t Supposed to Order Kids’ Meals, But…

Why Are Adults Ordering Kids’ Meals?

The research from Lightspeed Commerce highlights that 31% of adults who order from the kids’ menu do so because of the lower cost. With fast food prices climbing over the past few years, kids’ meals—typically priced lower than regular adult-sized portions—offer a budget-friendly alternative.

The findings also point to health considerations. 38% of respondents mentioned that the smaller portion sizes of kids’ meals align better with their desire to eat healthier. Smaller portions mean less temptation to overeat, and for many, it’s a way to enjoy the fast food experience without the excessive calories.

Tara Lewis, Yelp’s Vice President of Community and Trends, told The Wall Street Journal that ordering from the kids’ menu gives adults “a taste of the nostalgia of a McDonald’s french fry without the debt or the damage to my healthier diet.” It seems that for many, kids’ meals are a way to satisfy cravings while maintaining a healthier eating regimen.

Rising Fast Food Prices and Changing Consumer Behavior

The cost of fast food has surged in recent years, with an average 60% increase in fast food prices from 2014 to 2024—double the overall inflation rate of 31%. Notably, McDonald’s and Popeye’s saw price increases of 100% and 86%, respectively, over the past decade. The significant price hikes have made kids’ meals an attractive alternative for adults seeking affordable options.

A report from Circana, cited by The Wall Street Journal, reveals that orders for kids’ meals increased by 28% in 2024 compared to 2019, even as overall traffic to fast food chains declined. This shows that while consumers may be cutting back on dining out, they’re still opting for smaller, more affordable meals when they do.

Adults Aren’t Supposed to Order Kids’ Meals, But…

Although fast food chains typically reserve the kids’ menu for children, adults ordering from it has become commonplace. According to Lightspeed’s study, it’s rare for restaurants to challenge adults when they order kids’ meals, especially with mobile or takeout orders.

Dan Rowe, a restaurant investor, highlighted that this trend indicates a deeper issue for fast food chains: “If people are ordering off of your kids’ menu, you have other issues,” he said. It’s a clear sign that price hikes may have gone too far, and consumers are now seeking alternatives.

Other Changing Habits in the Fast Food Industry

The Lightspeed study also uncovered other shifts in consumer behavior, particularly regarding customer service:

  • 33% of consumers admitted to walking out of restaurants due to long wait times.
  • 20% of respondents said they had left because of rude staff.

These findings suggest that service quality is now more important than ever as consumers become more selective about where they dine. Tipping fatigue is another emerging trend, with 54% of consumers feeling pressured to leave a larger tip than they would prefer. This, along with the increasing expectation of 20-30% tips, is prompting some to tip less or even question the practice altogether.

Conclusion:

The soaring fast food prices and the desire for healthier portions have led adults to increasingly order from kids’ menus—a trend that highlights the growing demand for more affordable and smaller meal options. As fast food chains continue to raise their prices, consumers are looking for ways to enjoy their favorite foods without overspending. Additionally, the changing customer expectations for service quality, combined with the rise of tip fatigue, means restaurants must adapt quickly to meet these evolving demands.

The growing trend of ordering kids’ meals may be a sign that fast food chains need to rethink their pricing strategies or risk losing loyal customers. As consumer behavior shifts, restaurants will have to strike a balance between price, portion sizes, and service quality to stay competitive in an increasingly cost-conscious market.
