Six Killed in Bulambuli Flash Floods

BULAMBULI UGANDA: A flash flood in Bulambuli District, Uganda, claimed the lives of six people on Wednesday evening when River Kyuma burst its banks after heavy rains. The victims were swept away while attempting to cross a notorious, flood-prone section of the Bulago–Buginyanya road. The incident has shocked the local community, highlighting the dangers of crossing flooded roads during heavy rains.

Tragic Incident in Chuma Village

The tragedy occurred around 6 pm in Chuma Village, Bumwanbu Parish, Lusha Subcounty, where the floodwaters overpowered two motorcycles carrying the victims. Witnesses reported that the motorcycles were dragged into a gorge as the water from the swollen river surged across the road.

Local authorities have confirmed the identities of two victims: Ronald Wolimbwa and Rogers Musamali. The remaining four bodies are still missing as search operations continue.

Historical Flood Hazards in the Region

The section of the road, which also serves as a bridge, has long been considered hazardous, especially during the rainy season. Built in 1952, the road is prone to flooding every time the river swells, but this is the first time that the flooding has resulted in fatalities.

Residents noted that, in previous years, people managed to cross the flooded road, although the water often washed away property. However, this time, the water proved too powerful, leading to the loss of lives.

Rescue Operations and Continued Risks

Rescuers recovered one of the motorcycles, with the rider already deceased, while the second motorcycle was found abandoned with no trace of the occupants. Authorities continue to search for the missing victims.

In light of the tragedy, police and local leaders have strongly urged residents to avoid crossing flooded roads and to stay vigilant as heavy rains continue to affect the Elgon sub-region.

Conclusion

The flash floods in Bulambuli District have drawn attention to the dangers of flood-prone areas and the urgent need for safer infrastructure in flood-prone regions. As the search for the remaining victims continues, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the potential hazards posed by heavy rains in vulnerable areas.
