Sio Port is a quiet yet strategically significant port located in Busia County, Kenya, near the shores of Lake Victoria. Situated about 90 kilometers from Kisumu along the B1 Kisumu-Busia Road, it can be accessed by turning off at Bumala, following the C30 Road toward Funyula and Port Victoria. Sio Port is nestled in a picturesque region of the Lake Victoria Basin, an area renowned for its scenic beauty, featuring the Funyula and Samia Hills.
Once a secluded and remote village, Sio Port has transformed due to the development of better infrastructure, particularly the construction of reliable black-top roads. These efforts have significantly improved accessibility, making the port area an attractive destination for both tourism and trade. The C30 Bumala-Bunyala Road offers a stunning drive through lush countryside, with sweeping views of the hills, lakes, and nearby fishing villages.
The port is named after the Sio River, which runs through parts of Busia County into Uganda. Although the town itself consists mainly of kiosks offering minor supplies, the region holds enormous untapped potential for tourism and trade. Historically, there have been plans to upgrade Sio Port, with visions of transforming it into a thriving commercial hub and transportation gateway, primarily for cargo ships and boats. However, the full realization of this potential has yet to be achieved.
Sio Port’s location offers one of the most breathtaking views of Lake Victoria in Western Kenya. Just 24 kilometers from Bumala, the terrain around the port provides excellent vantage points for tourists, especially photographers and nature lovers. The surrounding area offers views of several islands, including Marenga in Budalang’i, Bumbe, and Bussijo in Funyula, as well as serene beaches that attract road trip enthusiasts and visitors looking to explore the beauty of the lake.
The port’s main role, like that of its counterpart, Port Victoria (or Port Bunyala), is to serve as a fish landing site. Both ports were originally intended to foster the transportation of goods, such as agricultural produce, between Kenya and neighboring Uganda. Though these goals remain unrealized, the ports still play a crucial role in the local economy, facilitating trade and enhancing transportation in the region.
Sio Port is also well-known for its warm and welcoming local community. Visitors to Busia County can explore its cultural heritage, experience the hospitality of the people, and enjoy the tranquil beauty of the lakeshore. Boat rides on Lake Victoria, visits to fishing villages, and scenic drives along the coast are just some of the activities that make Busia County a hidden gem for both local and international tourists.
