Tucked away in the tranquil highlands of Baringo County, the breathtaking Simot Twin Falls remains one of Kenya’s most underrated natural marvels. Just 15 kilometers north of Kabarnet Town, near Ossen Centre, this awe-inspiring site is where nature, art, and tranquility converge in a stunning display of beauty and geological wonder. The twin cascades, dropping dramatically from a 200-meter cliff, embody the raw and untamed essence of Baringo’s landscape.
The Simot Falls are set in a rugged, rocky terrain that reveals nature’s power and artistry. As the twin streams plunge into the clear plunge pools below, the shimmering reflections and soft mist create a mesmerizing atmosphere, particularly at sunrise and sunset. The Simot cliff itself, shaped by centuries of erosion, stands as a geological monument—a reminder that, as the local saying goes, “a strong man and a waterfall channel their own path.” The surrounding scenery is nothing short of magical, with the sound of rushing water blending with birdsong, making it a serene escape for hikers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.
Beyond its natural charm, Simot Falls has also become a cultural hotspot. Since 2019, the Simot Music Festival has been held annually at the site, celebrating Baringo’s rich cultural diversity, music, and art. The festival attracts local performers, artisans, and visitors eager to experience a vibrant blend of culture and nature. It’s a growing event that has already begun to place Simot Falls on the county’s cultural map.
Safety measures have also improved accessibility and conservation efforts. Thanks to the generosity of Baringo North businessman Jonathan Tokei, a 1.2-kilometer safety barrier was installed around the falls in 2019 to protect visitors from the steep drops and uneven terrain. Importantly, this initiative was carefully executed to preserve the natural beauty of the site while ensuring visitor safety.
Despite its modest infrastructure and rough approach road, the journey to Simot Falls is an adventure worth taking. Every twist of the rocky ascent rewards travelers with sweeping views of the Rift Valley escarpments, lush vegetation, and the unmistakable thunder of cascading water. As plans for establishing Baringo’s first Geopark continue, Simot Falls stands poised to become a centerpiece of eco-tourism and conservation in the region.
