Wealth and Leadership

Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the former President of the United Arab Emirates and Emir of Abu Dhabi, had a net worth of $18 billion at the time of his death. He also served as the supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces and was chairman of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), which oversees vast investments worldwide. Sheikh Khalifa passed away on May 13, 2022, at the age of 74.

Khalifa assumed the presidency on November 3, 2004, following the death of his father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. As Crown Prince, he had effectively been acting president since the 1990s due to his father’s declining health.

Early Life and Education

Born in Al Ain in 1948, Sheikh Khalifa was the eldest son of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Hassa bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan. He received his education at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England, preparing for a life of leadership and service.

Political and Leadership Career

Khalifa began his political journey in 1966 when his father became the Emir of Abu Dhabi. At just 18 years old, he was appointed mayor of Abu Dhabi’s Eastern Region. In 1969, he became Crown Prince and Head of the Department of Defense, transforming the Abu Dhabi Defense Force into the nucleus of the UAE Armed Forces.

After the UAE’s formation in 1971, Khalifa took on multiple roles, including Prime Minister of Abu Dhabi, Minister of Defense, and Minister of Finance. By 1976, he became deputy commander of the UAE Armed Forces and head of the Supreme Petroleum Council, where he shaped the nation’s energy policies.

When his father’s health declined in the 1990s, Khalifa began managing many of the UAE’s affairs. Upon officially becoming president in 2004, he furthered his father’s vision, overseeing significant modernization and growth across the UAE.

Contributions and Controversies

As president, Sheikh Khalifa spearheaded numerous initiatives domestically and internationally:

  • Infrastructure Development: Khalifa prioritized infrastructure, transforming Abu Dhabi into a global hub.
  • Humanitarian Aid: He launched programs such as the UAE Pakistan Assistance Program and approved significant aid packages to Yemen and other nations.
  • Military Support: In 2011, he deployed UAE forces to support NATO in Libya.

However, his leadership faced scrutiny, particularly over issues such as alleged bribery in property dealings and environmental concerns surrounding his palace construction in the Seychelles.

Personal Life and Interests

Sheikh Khalifa was married to Shamsa bint Suhail Al Mazrouei, with whom he had eight children. Known for his passion for traditional Emirati sports like camel and horse racing, Khalifa also invested in luxurious ventures, including commissioning the construction of Azzam, the world’s longest motor yacht.

Additionally, he owned over $1.7 billion in properties in London, managed through offshore companies as revealed in the Panama Papers.

Legacy

Sheikh Khalifa is remembered for his modernizing vision, philanthropic efforts, and contributions to the UAE’s economic and political prominence. His legacy continues under the leadership of his successors, who build on the foundation he laid for the nation’s growth.
