The FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 has proven to be an exciting tournament full of surprises, and in a thrilling quarterfinal clash, Saudi Arabia defeated Palestine 2-1 after extra time, ending the Palestinian team’s historic run. The match, held at Lusail Stadium on December 11, 2025, saw a dramatic turn of events, with Saudi Arabia edging out their opponents in a nail-biting contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

A Historic Moment for Palestine

Palestine’s journey to the quarterfinals was a historic achievement for their national football team. It marked the first time Palestine had reached the quarterfinal stage of the FIFA Arab Cup. Their journey to this point was remarkable, with strong performances that included an impressive showing in the AFC Asian Cup earlier in 2025, where they reached the knockout stages for the first time.

Despite the loss, Palestine’s run in Qatar 2025 was a milestone for Palestinian football and provided a platform for the team to showcase their growing talent on the international stage.

The Drama Unfolds: Saudi Arabia vs. Palestine

From the very start, the match between Saudi Arabia and Palestine lived up to its billing as an intense, closely fought encounter. The first half was marked by tight defensive play from both teams, with very few chances created. However, Saudi Arabia was the more dominant team in terms of possession and territory, managing to take four shots off-target compared to Palestine’s single attempt.

The breakthrough came in the 58th minute when Saudi Arabia was awarded a penalty after Salem Al-Dawsari was tripped inside the box by Palestine’s Mohammed Saleh. Firas Al-Buraikan stepped up to take the penalty and sent Palestine’s goalkeeper Rami Hamada the wrong way with a calm left-footed finish, giving Saudi Arabia a 1-0 lead.

But Palestine didn’t back down. Just six minutes later, Oday Dabbagh delivered a moment of brilliance. After controlling a deep ball from the right wing with his left foot, Dabbagh unleashed a powerful right-footed shot that beat Saudi Arabia’s keeper to level the score at 1-1. The goal was a testament to Palestine’s resilience and determination to compete against the region’s footballing powerhouses.

Extra Time Drama and the Winning Goal

As the match progressed into extra time, both teams were pushing hard to secure a place in the semifinals, but it was Saudi Arabia who would ultimately break the deadlock. In the 115th minute, Mohamed Kanno rose to meet a cross from the right and scored a stooping header that sent the ball past the Palestinian goalkeeper. The goal put Saudi Arabia ahead 2-1 and proved to be the match-winner, as Palestine’s efforts to find an equalizer in the final moments came up short.

Dabbagh had one last chance to take the game to penalties in the closing seconds, but his volley was off target, and with that, Palestine’s dream run in the tournament came to an end.

The Road Ahead for Saudi Arabia

With the win, Saudi Arabia secured their place in the semifinals of the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025. They will now face either Jordan or Iraq, who were set to play their quarterfinal match on December 12, 2025. Saudi Arabia has a proud footballing history, having won the Arab Cup multiple times, and their victory against Palestine sets them up as strong contenders to add another title to their collection.

Saudi Arabia’s performance in this match highlighted their tactical discipline, with Al-Buraikan’s penalty and Kanno’s extra-time goal showing their ability to stay composed under pressure. However, their victory wasn’t without moments of uncertainty, especially when Kanno’s earlier header was ruled offside, which added to the tension of the match.

Morocco’s Victory Against Syria

Earlier in the day, Morocco secured their spot in the semifinals with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Syria. Despite being reduced to 10 players after a 91st-minute red card for Mohamed Moufid, Morocco held firm and managed to grab the win. Walid Azaro’s 79th-minute strike was enough to see off Syria, and despite being down to 10 men, Morocco’s defense stood strong, earning them a well-deserved victory. Morocco will now meet the winner of the Algeria vs. United Arab Emirates quarterfinal.

The Future of the Tournament

With the quarterfinals now complete, the remaining teams in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 are all looking to claim the prestigious title. Saudi Arabia’s win over Palestine sets the stage for an exciting semifinal, while Morocco’s strong performance in their own quarterfinal has also made them a team to watch.

As the tournament continues, the intense competition and high stakes will ensure that the action remains thrilling. Fans across the Arab world will be watching closely as the semifinals approach, with teams like Saudi Arabia, Morocco, and the potential winners from the Jordan/Iraq match all looking to make their mark on this exciting edition of the Arab Cup.

Palestine’s Historic Journey

While Palestine’s historic run came to an end in the quarterfinals, their performances throughout the tournament will go down in the history books. Their ability to compete at the highest level and take on some of the best teams in the region has raised their profile in world football. For Saudi Arabia, this victory is just another step toward their goal of reclaiming the Arab Cup title, and their performance against Palestine showed their strength and resolve in tight situations.

With more thrilling football to come, the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 is set to continue delivering unforgettable moments. Fans will be eagerly watching as the semifinalists battle it out for the coveted title.
