Samsung’s First Tri-Fold Smartphone Nears Launch After Certification

Samsung is set to redefine the future of foldable devices with the imminent launch of its first tri-fold smartphone, marking a bold leap in mobile design and engineering. Identified under the model number SM-F9680, the tri-fold phone is expected to debut during Samsung’s anticipated Unpacked event later in 2025, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7.

Unlike current foldables that hinge in one place, the Samsung tri-fold smartphone introduces a dual-hinge mechanism that enables the device to expand into a tablet-sized display. When fully unfolded, the screen is projected to measure up to 10 inches, offering users a truly immersive multitasking and media experience. This places it just shy of the Huawei Mate XT, which boasts a 10.2-inch display.

The device has recently appeared in China’s product certification databases, strongly indicating that the tri-fold is nearing commercial readiness. Early renders and teaser leaks suggest that Samsung has moved well beyond the concept phase and is gearing up for production.

The Samsung tri-fold will reportedly feature 5G connectivity and include a 25W wired charger in the box. While this charging speed may seem modest compared to rivals like Xiaomi and Oppo, which now offer 90W or higher, Samsung appears to be prioritizing battery safety and longevity—a move consistent with its post-Note 7 strategy focused on reliability.

Production of the tri-fold smartphone will be limited to around 200,000 units initially, suggesting that Samsung is targeting early adopters and the ultra-premium segment. Industry insiders estimate the pricing to exceed $2,000, positioning the phone in the same luxury class as Huawei’s tri-fold, which launched at approximately $2,800.

The rollout is expected to begin in key Asian markets such as China and South Korea, with broader availability to follow based on demand and supply chain logistics. The tri-fold is also likely to be introduced alongside other devices during the Unpacked 2025 event, including the Galaxy Z Fold7, Z Flip7, and the rumored Flip7 FE (Fan Edition).

With competition heating up in the foldable segment, Samsung’s tri-fold smartphone represents a significant innovation—offering users a compact device that can seamlessly transform into a large-screen tablet. If successful, it could set a new standard for form factor versatility in the premium smartphone market.
