Public WIFI Links Vendors With Clients Throughout The Nation And Beyond in Kenya. Bungoma County traders are happy about the government-provided public WIFI since it allows them to transact with both domestic and foreign clients.
Eliud Owalo, CS in Information, Communications, and The Digital Economy, claims that the government is prioritizing public free internet access, and thousands of hotspots are being built nationwide to that objective.
The goal of the free public WiFi service in the markets is to facilitate online market trading between the general public and company owners.
Ben Wangila, Chairman of Chwele Market, praised the government for the project during a KNA spot check at the market on Monday. He also claimed that businesses are being exposed to a diverse variety of clients using their phones due to public WIFI.
According to Wangila, the traders are placing orders and establishing connections with suppliers of tomatoes and onions in Mwea, Kirinyaga, and Tanzania through the use of the public WIFI.
“We are currently experiencing a scarcity of onions and tomatoes, so this public WiFi has been helpful in enabling us to place orders for the same without having to travel,” he stated.
According to Wangila, the county’s mobile app has made it easier for vendors to pay for goods and services via the WIFI.
Wangila said, “Business people can now submit revenue funds through a mobile app that the county developed, rather than having to walk manually to where we are.”
The ICT Authority’s Director of Programs and Standards, Thomas Odhiambo, stated at Kamukuywa, Kilili on Monday during an inspection visit of the county’s public WIFI sites that the authority has set up three hotspots at Bungoma town, Chwele, and Kamukunywa markets.
Additionally, according to Odhiambo, the government intends to install 100,000 kilometers of optical fiber to link hospitals and other government buildings and offices.
