Port Victoria: A Quaint Fishing Village

Port Victoria, located in the extreme southern area of Busia County, is a small but lively town that rests on the shores of Lake Victoria. It is situated just 3 km from Bukoma and 22 km from Sio Port, making it an accessible and scenic destination for visitors traveling along the western flank of the county. The drive between Sio Port and Port Victoria offers picturesque views, passing through a series of small fishing villages and a few progressive centers, reflecting the rural charm and vibrant culture of the region.

Historically, Port Victoria served as a vital port for ferry services, connecting Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and other surrounding regions. This port facilitated the transport of goods and people across Lake Victoria, serving as a critical transportation hub for trade. Over the years, efforts have been made to improve the infrastructure of Port Victoria, including the development of harbors, roads, and essential amenities, to enhance the town’s connectivity and economic potential.

Despite its relatively small and underdeveloped appearance, Port Victoria is bustling with activity, particularly due to its proximity to Lake Victoria. Fishing is at the heart of this community, with over 5,000 households in the area relying on fishing as their primary source of livelihood. The town’s infrastructure upgrades, such as the installation of a fish cooling plant in Marenga and the improvement of roads, have started to breathe new life into the town, boosting its growth and appeal. Port Victoria, once a modest fishing village, now holds a more modern and developed vibe, thanks to these investments.

The town is also becoming increasingly attractive for tourism. With its proximity to the Samia Hills, Port Victoria offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and a glimpse into traditional fishing practices. Visitors can watch fishermen work with motorized boats and experience the age-old fishing techniques that have sustained the local population for generations. The town’s peaceful atmosphere, combined with the scenic views of Lake Victoria and the surrounding hills, makes it a perfect destination for those looking to experience authentic rural life in Kenya.

As a relatively under-explored gem in Busia County, Port Victoria is poised for growth. The improvements in infrastructure, coupled with the town’s rich cultural and historical significance, make it a promising location for further development, particularly in the realms of trade, transportation, and tourism.
