NEMA Orders 107 Hotels and Clubs Closed for Noise Violations in Kenya

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has ordered the immediate closure of 107 hotels and clubs nationwide due to violations of the 2009 Noise and Excessive Vibration Pollution Regulations. The directive, issued on September 22, 2025, follows a notable increase in public complaints about excessive noise, particularly in urban centers such as Nairobi and Mombasa, where complaints rose 15% over the past year.

Facilities have seven days to obtain the required licenses or face enforcement action. NEMA emphasized that the move aims to protect communities from disruptive noise, especially in residential areas.

Among the high-profile venues listed are Quiver Lounge (Eastlands), Jambo Lounge, Cool Breeze Bar (Ruiru), Havana Lounge (Northern Bypass), and Clarion Hotel (Westlands). The closure also affects smaller clubs, bars, and lounges across Kiambu, Kakamega, Nyali, Thika, Embakasi, and other regions.
