The Greenpark Pedestrian Underpass Nairobi, a Ksh.2 billion mega project located at the busy Haile Selassie–Uhuru Highway junction, is nearly complete and set to open soon. According to the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the project stands at 97% completion, marking a major milestone in Nairobi’s ongoing infrastructure modernization program.
Funded through the Road Maintenance Levy Fund and implemented by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) under the supervision of Civil One Consulting Engineers Ltd, the 500-metre underpass will provide a safe, efficient route for pedestrians navigating some of the city’s busiest corridors.
The underpass will connect key routes, including Mombasa Road, Upper Hill, Westlands, and the Railway Terminus, integrating the area into Nairobi’s broader non-motorized transport network.
A Landmark in Urban Safety and Connectivity
Once operational, the Greenpark Pedestrian Underpass Nairobi will serve more than 21,000 pedestrians daily, significantly improving safety at a junction previously known for chaotic traffic and dangerous crossings. The facility is designed to separate pedestrian flow from vehicular traffic, reducing road accidents, easing congestion, and cutting travel times within the central business district (CBD).
The National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure, which inspected the site on Thursday, praised the project as a transformational step in the city’s public mobility strategy. Lawmakers noted that the underpass reflects Nairobi’s shift toward modern, inclusive transport design, combining safety, accessibility, and commercial value.
Features and Accessibility
The Greenpark Pedestrian Underpass Nairobi is equipped with:
- Seven standby generators and a water pump system for drainage and reliability.
- CCTV surveillance and a police post to enhance security.
- Elevators to cater to persons with disabilities, the elderly, and expectant mothers.
- Interior lighting, mechanical systems, and landscaped surroundings for comfort and safety.
Additionally, the facility includes 39 commercial spaces, billboards, and rental units that will generate revenue for maintenance and sustainability. These spaces are expected to create new business opportunities for small and medium enterprises operating in the city center.
Final Works Before Opening
KeNHA reports that the remaining tasks involve installation of elevators, electrical and mechanical fittings, interior finishes, CCTV setup, and landscaping. The final phase will ensure smooth drainage, full accessibility, and aesthetic integration with surrounding roads and buildings.
A Step Toward a Smarter Nairobi
The completion of the Greenpark Pedestrian Underpass Nairobi underscores the government’s commitment to developing safe, smart, and inclusive infrastructure. As Nairobi evolves into a modern metropolis, projects like this reflect Kenya’s push toward urban sustainability and efficient mobility.
By minimizing pedestrian-vehicle conflicts and promoting walkability, the Greenpark project not only enhances safety but also reduces emissions and improves the overall urban experience. Once opened, it is expected to stand as a model of integrated transport planning, setting new standards for future city projects.
