Nabuyole Falls: A Lofty Splendour

Just 7 km east of Webuye town, nestled along the mighty River Nzoia, lies one of Western Kenya’s most spectacular natural attractions — Nabuyole Falls, formerly known as Broderick Falls. This breathtaking cascade, often affectionately called Webuye Falls due to its proximity to the industrial town, is a dazzling display of nature’s power and artistry. Surrounded by lush, tropical vegetation and steep cliffs, Nabuyole Falls has earned its place as Bungoma County’s most photographed landmark and a must-visit destination for lovers of the outdoors.

The falls descend dramatically through a rocky gorge, producing a thundering symphony of sound that echoes across the landscape. The scene is completed by towering boulders, mossy ledges, and smaller cascading rapids that weave together in a breathtaking choreography of movement and mist. A rail-guarded stairway leads visitors safely down to the base of the falls, offering an awe-inspiring perspective of the tumbling waters as they crash into the deep plunge pool below. Whether you stand atop the cliffs or watch from below, the view is nothing short of sublime.

The journey to Nabuyole Falls begins with a scenic drive through the verdant countryside of Webuye. From town, visitors turn off near St. Matthew’s ACK Primary School and follow a short murram road that winds toward the river. Although the route can be bumpy — especially in the rainy season — the adventure is well worth the effort. A 4×4 vehicle is ideal, but a regular saloon car can make the trip in good weather with a bit of determination.

Aside from its visual splendour, Nabuyole Falls holds a special place in local culture and memory. It has long been a gathering point for locals and travellers alike — a site for storytelling, photography, and quiet contemplation. The rushing waters of River Nzoia, which feed the falls, continue their course through Kakamega County before joining the great Nile system, linking the region to a larger ecological story that stretches across East Africa.

For visitors to Bungoma County, Nabuyole Falls offers more than a scenic stop — it’s an experience that captures the region’s raw beauty and unspoiled tranquility. Whether you’re an adventurer seeking a day trip or a traveller drawn by the romance of waterfalls, Nabuyole’s lofty splendour will linger long in memory.
