Meta, the tech giant led by Mark Zuckerberg, is reportedly reviving its smartwatch ambitions with a new device expected to launch in September 2025. After shelving its original project in 2022, Meta is now back in the wearable race—this time with AI-powered features, built-in cameras, and a design aimed at competing directly with Apple and Samsung.
According to reports, the upcoming Meta smartwatch will be unveiled during the Meta Connect 2025 event, scheduled for 17 September in the U.S. Hardware development for the watch is being handled by Chinese manufacturer Huaqin Technology.
A Second Attempt: Project “Milan” Rebooted
Codenamed “Milan”, the smartwatch project was Meta’s original push into the wearables market. Initial development included a curved-edge display, selfie camera, and physical navigation button—a notable shift from traditional touchscreen-only devices.
Key features once leaked or speculated for the Milan project included:
- Health tracking sensors
- Messaging and fitness integration
- Dual-camera system (front and rear)
- Potential custom Android OS instead of Wear OS
However, internal issues—mainly related to the dual-camera setup—reportedly hampered the device’s functionality and ultimately led to the project’s cancellation in 2023.
What We Know About the 2025 Meta Smartwatch
Sources suggest the revived Meta smartwatch will focus heavily on AI-powered interaction, likely leveraging Meta AI. The company aims to provide intelligent health tracking, gesture control, and real-time communication features.
Here’s what’s rumored for the 2025 version:
- Built-in cameras, including a possible dual-camera setup
- Health and fitness tracking sensors
- Integration with Meta AI for interactive features
- Custom OS optimized for Meta ecosystem apps
- Possible integration with Meta’s VR and AR platforms
Not Just a Watch: Gesture-Based Wristband in the Works
Separately, Meta is also rumored to be developing a non-traditional wrist-worn device that reads electrical muscle activity through surface electromyography (sEMG). This wearable allows users to:
- Open apps
- Navigate screens
- Move cursors
- Control devices without touching them
This experimental project hints at Meta’s long-term vision for human-computer interaction, far beyond conventional touch interfaces.
Can Meta Disrupt the Smartwatch Market?
The smartwatch market is currently dominated by Apple, Samsung, and Google’s Wear OS ecosystem. Meta’s entry, if executed successfully, could shake up the space—especially if its AI and camera-driven features provide real-world utility.
Still, whether the new Meta smartwatch reaches shelves or remains in prototype phase remains to be seen. But if it launches as expected in September 2025, it could mark Meta’s boldest hardware move since the Quest VR headsets.
