History of Matuga Girls High School

Matuga Girls High School was founded in 1967, initially established as a Harambee secondary school for girls. The site, originally an Agricultural Training Centre, was later converted into a detention camp before becoming a school. The transformation of the site into a girls’ secondary school was a direct response to the growing need for quality education for girls in the region.

In 1970, the first Form Four students sat for their ‘O’ level exams, marking a significant milestone in the school’s history. The school further expanded, introducing A-levels in 1973 and operating as a double-stream institution. In 1989, with the nationwide shift to the 8-4-4 system, the A-level stream was phased out, and KCPE was introduced as the basis for student admissions.

By 2013, Matuga Girls High School was elevated to national school status, a recognition of its consistent academic achievements, expansion in infrastructure, and the school’s growing reputation in the educational community. As of 2025, the school is a four-streamed institution, accommodating a diverse range of students from all parts of the country.

KCSE Performance at Matuga Girls High School

Matuga Girls has a strong academic reputation, consistently achieving impressive results in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). In the 2024 KCSE, the school produced excellent results, which included:

The school’s mean score for the 2024 exams was 7.37, a slight dip from the mean score of 9.532 in the 2023 KCSE. Nevertheless, the school continues to provide a solid foundation for its students, many of whom go on to pursue further education in universities across the country.

School Fees at Matuga Girls High School

As a national school, Matuga Girls is categorized under Cluster Four (IV) by the Ministry of Education, which sets the annual fee cap at approximately Ksh 75,798 per student. This fee covers tuition, boarding, and other mandatory charges. However, the actual fees may vary slightly due to additional levies imposed by the school’s Board of Management (BoM), such as:
