Mastercard Foundation, one of the largest philanthropies globally, has announced the appointment of Sewit Ahderom as its next President and CEO, effective January 1, 2026. Ahderom succeeds Reeta Roy, who has served the Foundation for nearly two decades, helping shape its focus on Africa-first initiatives and youth empowerment.
A New Chapter for Mastercard Foundation
Ahderom brings with her an extensive background in technology and private equity, with a deep understanding of both developed and emerging markets. She is the co-founder of Gro Intelligence, a leading data platform focused on agriculture, climate, and economic trends. Her previous experience as Vice President at Helios Investment Partners, an Africa-focused private equity fund, further enriches her leadership capabilities, especially in addressing agrifood systems and technological advancements—areas central to the Foundation’s mission.
“Sewit is a highly talented global executive with a deep understanding of the African continent,” said Zein Abdalla, Chair of the Mastercard Foundation’s Board. Her appointment aligns perfectly with the Foundation’s vision for Africa, especially its Young Africa Works strategy, which aims to help 30 million young Africans secure dignified work by 2030.
Driving Tech-Powered Solutions for Africa’s Challenges
Under Reeta Roy, Mastercard Foundation became a prominent player in addressing education, entrepreneurship, and financial inclusion across Africa. With Ahderom’s leadership, the Foundation is expected to accelerate its shift towards tech-driven solutions for tackling Africa’s most pressing challenges, particularly those related to youth unemployment and skills development.
Ahderom’s entrepreneurial background gives her a unique advantage in scaling complex systems, especially for young entrepreneurs in Africa. This is a critical asset as the Foundation continues to support small businesses and entrepreneurial initiatives. She is committed to enhancing collaborations with young Africans, ensuring their voices shape the programs designed to improve their opportunities.
Impact on Mastercard Foundation’s Ongoing Initiatives
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, which has empowered more than 40,000 young Africans by providing education and career pathways, is one of the Foundation’s flagship programs. The program’s success, along with Young Africa Works, which has already helped 13 million young Africans find fulfilling work, reflects the ongoing efforts to tackle youth unemployment and lack of opportunities.
Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mastercard Foundation launched a $1.5 billion partnership with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention to improve vaccine access across the continent, further solidifying its commitment to Africa’s future.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Collaboration
Ahderom’s leadership marks a new chapter for the Foundation, one that focuses not only on the Africa-first agenda but also on technology and innovation as key drivers of growth. “I’m excited to listen and learn from young people, our staff, and our partners, and to strengthen the collaborations that will continue to shape meaningful change across Africa,” Ahderom shared.
With her unique experience in investing, entrepreneurship, and understanding of Africa’s needs, Ahderom is poised to build on the Foundation’s legacy and ensure a future where Africa’s youth are empowered to shape their own success.
