A burial ceremony in Laikipia North turned into a heated political showdown on Monday, February 10, 2025, after Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere openly criticized allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing them of using funerals as political platforms. Korere Confronts Gachagua’s Allies
During the church service, Korere passionately called out Gachagua’s allies, saying they had turned public gatherings—including funerals—into opportunities to push their political agenda.
“I am a Catholic, and I do not want to see people bringing shame to the altar… Where I come from, when people go to a funeral, they leave these nonsensical sideshows,” she said, leaving the audience stunned.
The Laikipia North MP also took a direct jab at Gachagua himself, questioning his recent call for the Central Kenya region to abandon the Kenya Kwanza government, despite having played a key role in its formation just months ago.
“You made the Kenya Kwanza government, and one day the former DP called me tough-headed and stated that I, together with Uhuru and Raila, would fail.”
She further criticized the use of local dialects in political engagements, implying that Gachagua’s team was excluding non-Kikuyu speakers and fostering division within the government.
Gachagua Responds to Korere’s Attack
Korere’s remarks triggered strong reactions from Gachagua’s supporters, some of whom stood up in protest.
When Gachagua later took the stage, he apologized to the bishop for Korere’s comments, accusing her of disrespecting an entire community.
“Bishop, on behalf of the political class, please accept our apology for the disrespect shown to you by that Member of Parliament who is an ally of President William Ruto.”

Gachagua Declares Political War Against Ruto’s Camp
The confrontation at the funeral comes just a day after Gachagua made a bold declaration, stating that the entire Mount Kenya region had politically cut ties with President Ruto and would not support his re-election bid in 2027.
“From today, the people of Central Kenya have politically disengaged from President Ruto. We will not support him in 2027,” Gachagua announced during a televised interview on Sunday, February 9.
He further vowed to campaign against Ruto’s allies in Central Kenya, ensuring they lose in the next general elections.
“Those who sell our people for their personal gain will never see leadership again in Mt. Kenya.”
A Shifting Political Landscape in Central Kenya
The public clash between Korere and Gachagua underscores the deepening divisions within Central Kenya’s political leadership. With Gachagua rallying against Ruto, and pro-Ruto MPs like Korere pushing back, the region is increasingly becoming a battleground for political influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
