The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has officially announced a tax return deadline extension to July 5th, 2025, after the iTax system crashed on the original deadline day, June 30th.
System Overload Disrupts Taxpayer Access
The iTax portal, which is KRA’s digital tax system, faced technical issues due to a massive surge in users trying to beat the June 30th deadline. Many taxpayers were unable to log in or receive the required one-time passwords (OTPs), effectively locking them out of the system.
In a statement, KRA confirmed:
“Due to the high volume of taxpayers attempting to file their returns on 30th June 2025, the system experienced technical difficulties which disrupted the normal functioning of the return filing and payment services.”
Extended Service Hours for Physical and Phone Support
To accommodate the rush, KRA announced extended hours for in-person visits and phone support:
- Physical service centres open daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM
- Call centre lines available from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM
Online filing has resumed and remains accessible through the KRA iTax portal.
Who Must File and Why It Matters
Under Kenyan law, every person with a PIN must file their KRA tax return, even if they have no income (nil return). Failure to file by the deadline attracts penalties and interest from KRA.
The KRA tax return deadline extension gives taxpayers a crucial lifeline. This is the longest such extension granted by the authority since 2012.
Avoid Penalties — File Before July 5
The KRA urges all taxpayers to take advantage of the new deadline. Whether filing from home or visiting a centre, submitting returns by July 5th will ensure compliance and help avoid penalties.
