Kenya U20 Star Javan Omondi Secures Historic NCAA Division 1 Move to Gardner-Webb University

Rising Stars winger Javan Omondi has made history by becoming one of the first Kenya U20 players to earn a direct move to NCAA Division 1 football in the United States, securing a full athletic and academic scholarship to Gardner-Webb University.

  • A Trailblazer for Kenyan Football

The 19-year-old, who plays for Ulinzi Stars in the FKF Premier League, caught the eyes of scouts during his standout performances at the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

Structured Transfer Path Opens Global Doors

The move was confirmed on Friday, May 23, by Dream Sports, an organization dedicated to global talent development. In collaboration with Kenyan scout Meshack Mutende and coach Cedric Muteshi, Dream Sports facilitated Omondi’s groundbreaking transfer.

“Congratulations to Javan Omondi, who will continue his academic and athletic career at Gardner-Webb University in NCAA Division 1 with a full scholarship,” Dream Sports announced.

Omondi is expected to relocate to North Carolina in June ahead of the fall semester and competition season.

Omondi Grateful for Life-Changing Opportunity

Taking to social media, Omondi thanked God and his supporters for the opportunity:

“I express profound gratitude to the Divine for orchestrating my successful transfer to Gardner-Webb University. I am poised to embark on this journey next month. Wishing myself the utmost success and felicity!”

From High School Talent to Rising Star

Omondi’s rapid rise began in 2023 through high school football, before exploding onto the FKF Premier League stage with Ulinzi Stars. Known for his blistering pace, elite dribbling, and tactical intelligence, the left-footed winger became a nightmare for defenders.

According to Korastats, Omondi leads the FKF Premier League with an 84% dribble success rate and boasts a 97% pass reception rate—testament to both his skill and consistency.

Whether driving down the wing or cutting inside, his dynamic movement creates space, draws fouls, and generates chances for teammates.

More Than Just Attack: A Complete Footballer

Beyond his flair, Omondi is praised for his defensive commitment and team mentality. He frequently tracks back to assist fullbacks, showcasing maturity rarely seen in players his age.

Though his finishing is still a work in progress—occasionally opting for low-percentage shots—his positioning and intent keep opposition defenses on edge.

A Trailblazer for Kenyan Football

Omondi’s NCAA Division 1 move represents more than personal achievement—it signals a new era for Kenyan football development, with structured scouting and global partnerships unlocking pathways for young talent.

His success sets a precedent for future Rising Stars, proving that with the right support, Kenyan athletes can make it to the world stage—both academically and athletically.
